This atrocious war began in August 1914. It is now March 1964 and believe it or not, it is still being waged.
Occidental and American troops are fighting against the armies of a latter-day Genghis Khan, who has already put a bloody end to the Bolshevik Revolution. He is planning to create a Russo-Mongol Empire, stretching from the Atlantic to Vladivostok.
While some aspects of this world seem to be true to 1914, such as the trenches and bunkers, you will also find that several decades of concerted war effort have led to the development of some very modern types of weapons, transportation and other technology.
The grim atmosphere of fighting in a protracted war of attrition
An original setting where the stock market directly influences the war
Challenging gameplay with multiple ways of completing objectives
This is a really unique game, that's really under rated. It does have some weird design choices and it can at times be frustrating, but all in all it is a very enjoyable game!
I played this about a year after it came out, and now I can play it again. This game has held up well - not the graphics - but the gameplay is still compelling. I love the premise of the game and the WWI feel to it. The game can be overly-challenging and there are a few parts, especially in the the last third of the game, that are frustrating. Overall, this is still a solid game with a unique art style and feel.
I had heard about Iron Storm years ago for its appealing scenario but never heard it came out until I saw it on sale in a office furniture shop (?!?!).
I did not buy it then. Add a few and here is that same game on sale at GOG. I saw the few reviews saying it was a difficultly challenging game but also worth the try.
After playing through the game, I'd agree: it's a very decent shooter and I looooooooved the guns.
The game shows its age and might not feel as polished as other games from that time (e.g. Half-Life) but it's fun and hard in interesting ways. It is also very linear so do not expect to get lost.
The only real complaints I would have are:
- scripted events which bug out once in a while (so that you effectively need to load a previously saved game).
- enemies appearing out of nowhere due to the aforementioned scripted scenarii.
- story not as strong as what it could have been.
- some people might definitely find it too linear.
- some puzzles are not straightforward so do not hesitate to use a walkthrough for those.
All the rest is plain fun !
Conclusion: not a major game but a decent one nonetheless. I was satisfied with this purchase (and I hated Aquanox 2).
This was the third expensive game, that I ever bought for my PC; just after it was released 2006. Payed insane money for it. I have played it through several times. On each difficulty. I even found the hard level not hard enough. I am still wondering, why so many people say that this game is too hard even on easy.
You just have to consider some simple combat rules to be successfull: 1.) grenades explode at 4th tick in your hands, throw them at 3rd tick towars you or at 2nd tick at 45° angle (red grenades to kill groups, gas grenades to block corridors) 2.) the pistol you got at the beginning is the only silenced weapon, stealth gameplay IS possible with it 3.) arm your comrades with your primary weapon or shotgun at all possible ocassions, you will find new weapons easily. 4.) when you are about to become a prisoner of war, drop all the guns but DROP NO grenades (the AI does not see them as weapons) 5.) Veronica machine gun is the best weapon, even better then the rocket-machinegun. 6.) tanks drive almost all the time the same path, it is easys to throw mines in front of them.
I consider this game to be more an arcade style because of the very good gameflow. The game was so much better then the MOH in its time. It was extremely underrated and then forgotten. And I really liked the impact of the grenades on the enemies (last time I have seen such realistic effects in the game "shellshock nam '67"). It is not difficult at all, but I am a veteran of the first three Unreal Tournaments and the complete Operation Flashpoint... In my opinion this is the game even doesnot allows to test, how good you are in ego shooters, because it is too easy.
