Insurmountable is an adventure roguelike with permadeath, in which the player has to overcome huge mountains. Thanks to the procedurally created environment, no two climbs are the same. Make sure that your climber stays alive by always making sure that your vital values don't get into the critical range. This task is made more difficult by a dynamic weather system, day/night changes and a multitude of randomly generated events, where you never know in advance how they will end. Your decisions matter....every single one. Because anyone could be your last.
Choose one of three characters with different skills and background stories and start by climbing the first mountain. Search crates, caves and ancient ruins for equipment from past adventurers. You'll need it, because even the first mountain will demand everything from you. But don't worry. As time goes by, you'll become stronger and stronger. Take advantage of a sophisticated skill system to determine which strengths your climber should have.
In the course of each of the three mysterious stories, you will meet dangerous animals, overcome deadly abysses, encounter sinister and well-meaning characters, who do not always have to be human. Here, too, each of your decisions decides the following events.
Three mountains have to be conquered at the end. One higher and deadlier than the previous one. Divide your forces and your equipment correctly, because you don't have a second attempt and you can forget about learning a route. In Insurmountable you have to cope with unknown dangers, react spontaneously to unpredictable events and realize in the end that, as in life, you can't always know the consequences of your decisions, but you have to cope with them anyway and in the end, it often turns out differently than you thought.
Face the challenge of ever new and changing dangers, face snowstorms and the sheer force of nature, always keep your eyes on the summit and overcome the insurmountable.

While some screenshots look enticing, don't let them fool you.
The entirety of the gameplay consists of choosing which hex to move onto next with some short and repetitive text-based multiple-choice "adventures" along the way. While this by itself can be bearable and even relaxing, there are also some questionable design choices, such as not being able to see much of the upcoming path. Camera cannot be moved far away from the character and can only really show anything when pointed toward the mountain, not away from it, which means that you have to constantly fight it during descents.
Story looks interesting at first but I'm not ready to learn it through hours of repetitive gameplay, unfortunately.
The game isnt that complicated or difficult really but I dont think thats the point. the exploration is done really well and with the scenery and the soundtrack it is very relaxing. Even with some of the higherstakes events Ive never felt stressed or worried about decision making. Its just a really well done mountain climbing game with a really interesting story twist.
Simply put: game has a honestly great concept and decent gameplay, if limited to strategying and some half-repetitive events, not unlike a visual novel to be honest.
But the atmosphere is nice and it's a welcome change from a lot of survival games.
The board-like terrain is a good idea given the premise of a turn-based gameplay and the graphics are fine. The camera is pretty bad but I can put that under "artistic choice linked to limited visibility in mountain environment"
So all good be pretty good... except the scenario is textbook falsely inspired writing: you begin with a mystery and instead of keeping it a mystery, let pretend it's even more mysterious by just dumping a truckload of magic written as "science-fiction" except it's just misused scientific words thrown at the player because of I suppose the author needing to justify why, of all things, they had to badly use time-travel instead of doing some world building.
I'm sure they had the best of intentions in mind but that just ruins everything past the first mission and that is just sad.
