Good, but Ever Unfinished.
So... It's hard to approach this game with the announcement of development ceasing on additional content meant to be in the game--both from those who backed it as well as Guest characters the game will tease you about finding through dialogue. The game is a love letter of Metroidvania traversal and exploration and unique combo-driven RPG combat familiar to those of Valkyrie Profile. The platforming and traversal is a weak point throughout a good chunk of the game, with it only starting to really develop and evolve once the game eventually gives you some necessary tools. And it only really hits it stride towards the end and with optional points throughout the earlier maps. Combat then ends up carrying much of the game, and while everything is fluidly and beautifully animated? As you progress, there's a feeling of things missing here or there. Several characters, for instance, lack an ultimate ability which can sometimes limit their usefulness. And in the case of guest characters, you'll see murmurings of NPCs talking about them and hinting toward their inclusion with later patches... But with development ceased, they're no longer being put into the game. The cast as is is strong, but each character plays uniquely from one another. It is easy to settle into a specific party because you prefer how the individuals in it play. And sadly, with some left feeling as though they are missing pieces of game play or feel unpolished and others unimplemented entirely? That will not change now. Doubly so for one person The story is serviceable, it isn't incredibly strong or surprising but it flows well enough--even if the Metroidvania elements tend to interrupt or outright stop it dead in its tracks. Progressing through it then can at times feel stilted, having to wander around through several mainline stories to finally find what is needed. Overall the game is good, but not at full price. Wait for a healthy discount, and keep in mind what is offered is all that will ever be.
