Description

INCISION is a brutal, fast, merciless blast from the past inspired by the godfathers of the first person shooter genre such as Doom, Quake, Blood, Shadow Warrior. INCISION offers an experience that demands skill and focus from its player, and rewards them with intense carnage that will paint the town red. Yours is a simple job. Cut, shoot, burn and decimate it all to stop the spread of the Growth. Mercy is weakness. Hesitation is death.

INCISION is designed to be merciless in its difficulty, but the player will never feel weak in the face of danger. Your arsenal is varied, powerful, loud, and will easily turn enemies into sticky red puddles, as long as they don't first do it to you. Movement is fast and responsive. The story never gets in the way of the gameplay, but there is plenty of it be found for those who may seek to unravel its mysteries.

Ten weapons of mass-slaughter, all including powerful alternative firing modes. Fire a volley of bouncing incendiary bombs out of your shotgun. Lob grenades from your heavy machine gun to turn your foes into red mist. Do tricks with your trusty revolver to maximize its damage output. Spray a volley of four incendiary rockets and watch even the strongest foe crumble into ashes before you. Go berserk with a saw-spear that works as a long-range slashing weapon or as a close-range buzzsaw.

The world of INCISION has been transformed into a living nightmare where a ever-consuming, ever-growing mass of flesh and machine live in unholy symbiosis. All we hold familiar and comfortable has been turned into a network of hellish, rusty, pulsating labyrinthian series of factories that serve as the nerves and organs for some greater being that only seeks to merge, unite and grow.

The Growth has seeks to unite and merge all life and technology alike, turning its people into machine-freaks, all of them designed to turn anyone who opposes its will inside-out. Augmented soldiers with burst-firing energy rifles, mad sycophants with ricocheting sawblades, machine spider-priests aka. "Spiderpopes" with homing missiles, and ancient things from beyond our world. INCISION's roster of monsters will keep you on your toes til the bloody end.

What sets INCISION apart - and makes it so brutally satisfying - is its old-school extra lives system, with 1-ups scattered across the map to help you avoid death. You’d better hunt them down, because if you run out, the level restarts. No checkpoints. No quicksaves. Each level must be beaten in one go.

INCISION challenges you to learn and adapt, sharpening your reflexes, your aim, your rage - until you’re no longer the prey, but the butcher of the nightmare spawn.

Brutal. Unforgiving. But always fair. This is what a true FPS challenge tastes like.

A shame

I really do like the look of the PS1 nostalgia boom we're getting. People who grew up with that system with those games have a fondness for the look of those games, myself included. Throw in some Quake and you should have a banger. Unfortunately, it's not this game. The difficulty is far too extreme. Those retro shooters were tough, sure, but also allowed you to save and didn't rely upon an archaic life system. This sort of system doesn't reward you for fun, experimental play but causes you to play more conservatively (aka boring) because you don't want to die and have to run through the level again. While I dig the look, the color pallet does not match the speed of the game. I got disoriented often because you move and turn at the speed of sound in this drab environment. It turns everything into a blurry mess as you run around, getting into fights with enemies. Speaking of combat, the game is very unforgiving about taking damage. You don't find much health and enemies hit like trucks. Their attack patterns are very sporadic and because of how drab the graphics are, they tend to get lost in the environment when fights get hectic. It didn't make for a fun experience. The weapons didn't feel very good to use. They lack oomph and don't feel all that powerful. The twirl super-shot you can do with the magnum is fun but because you get very little ammo for the gun I ended up not using it often. It's a game that suffers from a thousand cuts. There's a solid idea in there but the execution leaves much to be desired. The life system clashes against the difficulty, making things more frustrating than rewarding, the visuals make parsing information extremely hard and the weapons themselves just aren't that fun to use. The low poly look of everything is great but it's in service of a setting that is very unpleasant to look at, so the craft is lost. It's such a shame There's clearly passion on display here but it didn't translate to an enjoyable game.

Fantastic retro shooter

The game amazed me on all levels. The combat feels great, the movement is slick, the enemies are varied and force you to adapt to their mechanics. and you have a massive arsenal all with alternatives modes to top it off. Battles range from close-quarters battles in tight spaces, to enclosed arenas, to massive open area swarming with enemies, the game keeps mix and matching battlefields so you never grow dull from cruising through the levels. Every single weapon has its strengths and ammunition is abundant, so you never really run out of any ammo. You can use whatever you want, or keep switching mid-battle depending on your needs. Game is also not that hard, through my whole 6-8 hours playthrough, I only died twice in battle, playing on the 3rd difficulty from all 5 available. The lack of saves was not felt at all, but you have to judge your skill level beforehand. If you're more of a casual player, don't shy from picking the easiest difficulty, the only 2 factors modified are enemy damage and projectiles speed. The amount of enemies stay the same, so the game can still pose a challenge. And I personally really enjoyed the lack of manual and autosaves. All the levels are short, but packed, 15-25 minutes is the average for a level. You don't get punished that much for having to restart it, and limited lives increase the enjoyment of battle when the stakes are higher. And the game gives you extra lives that are auto-consumed on death, you only restart a level once you run out of them, and some levels I finished with 6 of them without consuming one (but do keep in mind they don't transfer to next levels). To top it off, the music and visuals, from atmosphere to the art direction, are not something you'd normally encounter in a fast-paced retro shooter. The set-pieces are breathtaking, tons of work was put to make you LOOK at what you're witnessing and experiencing, and there's lots of sight to appreciate. The music adds a lot to battles, it utilizes very unusual noises, but the overall tone with the aggressiveness of beats keeps your blood pumping. The developer put additional details to make sure the music scales through the level, going faster depending on the size of the battle, or slower when you're supposed to take in the atmosphere and visuals. And there's a surprising amount of lore, with clues scattered around the level, and after finishing the game, a full bestiary that ties all the lore together and explains what happens in detail. Lots of neat details. My only 2 negatives points would be, firstly, the lack of feedback from getting hit. Whenever you take damage, there's barely anything to notify you about it. Some more feedback would be better, like your screen shaking a little or your health bar flashing red and tweaking. Most of the time you won't expect to die and consume your extra-life until it happens and you think "Huh, so I was getting hit a lot". Second negative are death pits. The game, especially later on, has death pits. You fall in you die, end of story. Or consume the extra life. This is slightly too punishing, especially since you want to make full use of the movements system, but sometimes it can be way too risky or you fall off by accident. Simply punishing you with some damage for falling away should be enough. Nonetheless, I can't recommend it enough, it's a stellar experience, for cheap, not too long to overstay its welcome but with enough content to keep you satisfied.

Limited 1up classic fps

It's great. If you like classic "boomershooters" this is a wonderful recent example. However if you get mad for losing your progress in a level like doom because you died one too many times i guess it can be frustrating. I'm more experienced than most with these games so outside a few levels I was ok with it. The only annoying parts were getting stuck in geometry two times. It takes the lives system and commits to it. Wich is more interesting than just allowing players to savescum imo. Feels really complete and consistent. Even if the artstyle can be a little confusing. The dev clearly states what his artistic intent and experience is yet gives you options to change it to your preference. (I personally turned down a couple of its visual effects and filters for visibility) You have no strafejumping, but movement is VERY fast and you have a doublejump that doesn't elevate you much but gives you a load of hangtime. You're gonna need both. As there's platforming and hidden secrets over precarious pits and enemies and projectiles will rush you like crazy. Weapons aren't very exotic but mostly feel good to use. Standout being the mini nuke launcher on your rocketlauncher that warns the environment that it's been armed with a robotic voice alarm. That kept making me laugh throughout. Some weapons can have some unexpected behaviours and effects wich make you tackle your standard machinegun or revolver a bit differently than usual if you go out of your way to learn them inside out. Visually its a mix of silent hill, quake 2 and darksouls 3 or the flying rock world in elden ring. Each episode leans more into one than the other. Features some neat setpieces and cutscenes. tl;dr Overall I didn't feel it did all that much new, but it delivered more in terms of quality and quantity than I expected. If you like old fps games and have an itch, this is a great choice. PS: Could probably use a proofreading pass. It features many spelling mistakes that make the flavour text more confusing than the lore already is. (wich is all optional and can be completely ignored if you want to)

Has much potential but lacks...

Everyone will complain about the saves, I did too. Thr enemy movement is janky, they leep forward in a very wierd unatural way. The guns feel, meh all around. your generic set, nothing is terrible, but nothing stands out either. I really don't like the palette choice, brown or flat red, on EVERYTHING. It makes judging depth a real pain. I can't speak to the music, I always turn it of and listen to the game sounds.
