Lunch Boxes and Cats

I first encountered inbento on the iOS platform (iPhone) and later on PC through the Bundle for Ukraine. However saying this, this game started its life as a PC game even though you wouldn't know it when playing the mobile version because the port was well done. Gameplay involves following recipes to make cute bento lunchboxes. Things start out very simple and get progressively harder with each level section as new puzzle mechanics are introduced. The system requirements really are as low as they look. I can play it on my laptop without a cooling pad and not have the computer get angry by running the internal fan to shed heat. Also this game has the most important feature that a game could possibly have: cats. You'll see them in the intermissions and more importantly, you're playing as one of the cats making the bentos and living your best life in a world setting full of cats.

Makes you want a bento made with love

I’ve always found Japanese parents’ craft in preparing beautiful bento (e.g., kyaraben) impressive and awe-inspiring. The quality and presentation of the ingredients, and the meticulousness with which the meals were made and packaged are indicative of the love they have for their children. This practice of bento preparation is the theme if ‘inbento’, a puzzle game in which you manipulate shapes – styled as ingredients or dishes – to fit into a 3x3 or 4x3 bento box. Does a puzzles game like this need a story? No, but with 127 puzzles in total, the saccharine story effectively serves as incentive for players to work their way through the 14 chapters of brainteasers. ‘inbento’ has its roots on mobile platforms, designed to be played in short bursts over a period of time. Although it has been ported well to the PC (played well with either keyboard or game controller), this play style doesn’t quite fit desktop PC gaming. It’s still enjoyable regardless, though it may work better on handheld gaming PCs. The game did get more challenging midway for me, and I often needed hints on the first move or two before I could solve most puzzles in the latter half. So don’t let its kawaii presentation fool you, ‘inbento’ can be a challenging shape-manipulation game. If you enjoy this type of puzzles, you’ll likely find this game charming and fun.

Cute and challenging

100% worth the full price. It's so cute and gets very challenging. Every new mechanic is well introduced and smoothly transitions into harder difficulties. If you like puzzle games this is a must buy!

Cute and Challenging

Following an adorable story of a family of cats, you create bentos given from parent to child via puzzles. The levels vary well in mechanics, and scale in difficulty from the extremely easy introductory ones to proper headscratchers. The game's art style and music, in combination with the gameplay loop, create a cozy vibe. I personally dipped in and out of the game across a week, but with a hot drink and potentially snacks, I could very easily imagine sitting down to play this game for hours.
