What would you do if you were forced to relive your failures over and over again?

In Stars and Time tells the story of Siffrin and their adventurer friends—a found family bound together by fate in order to end the tyrannical reign of an evil king. But as victory is just within the party’s grasp, a tragedy occurs, the clock resets, and they have to do it all again.

As Siffrin’s the only one who notices this loop, each new start wears away at his cheerful veneer, yet he keeps going in hopes he can end this temporal tragedy once and for all.

In Stars and Time is a time-looping RPG adventure. With each loop, Siffrin gains a new perspective on the world around them, opening up new solutions to puzzles and allowing them to make better choices in conversation. Equip memories as armor, pray to the Change God to improve your team’s capabilities each loop, and challenge deadly foes to Rock, Paper, Scissors as Siffrin seeks the truth.

Our Adventurers

  • Siffrin (he/they): Stressed, depressed, and under duress. (Don’t worry about it. They’re doing fine.) The punmaster protagonist of our neverending tale.
  • Mirabelle (she/her): A caring and nervous housemaiden mysteriously blessed by the god she so ardently follows.
  • Isabeau (he/him): Defender with a heart of gold. Cares dearly for his people and his friends.
  • Odile (she/her): The mature and nonsensical researcher studying…something. (No, she will not tell you what it is.)
  • Bonnie (they/them): Wait a minute, who brought this kid along???

Features

  • Save the world through the power of Rock, Paper, Scissors in strategic turn-based RPG combat encounters.
  • Ignore the limits of time and space to fix your past mistakes by repeating the same two days over and over again.
  • Equip the memories you have of your friends to make your party stronger in combat.
  • Watch the fate of this world unfold as you escape the twists and turns of this endless(???) loop.
  • Eat samossas with your friends!
  • Get heckled by a cheeky ethereal being of infinite starlight.
  • Pray to a god for good luck in your travels. You’re gonna need it.

In Stars and Time can be unforgiving, but if you're a sucker for story-driven RPGs with roguelite mechanics and tricky puzzles, you won't find many better options out there. It's a difficult game to beat quickly, with our initial run taking us just over the 45-hour mark. Aside from the small problems like some unclear visual cues and minor lag issues, the game plays brilliantly. The characters are loveable and feel incredibly authentic, and the story is deeply engaging. Just be warned - almost every item becomes important at some stage. There are heaps of rooms, hidden passages, and corridors, and you'll need to remember where everything is if you want to progress. Keep a pen and paper handy.

If In Stars and Time catches your eye, I don't think you will be disappointed. Come for the nostalgia and quirk, stay for the laughs and tears.

If you’re a person who maybe saw an antagonistic meme once about “quirky indie rpg about depression” and decided to make hating those your entire personality, move on — there’s nothing for you here. But if you’re willing to engage with content about mental health seriously, and explore the concepts of life, death, what what it would actually feel like to be trapped in a loop, forcing your friends and family to do certain tasks repeatedly — then you’ll find a thought-provoking and well-written story within In Stars and Time.

Such a let down

This is another game that I thought looked really cute and I thought would be fun and heartwarming and sad. Hate to say it, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Without getting too much into spoilers, this game has a concept that relies upon making you invested in the characters and their dialogue. Even if only the first time around. The gameplay is very typical RPG stuff, except even more unimportant and uninteresting than the average. The "game" elements of this game aren't fun and don't matter. The story is what matters. So the writing is even more important than usual to get you invested. Except the writing doesn't manage that. It doesn't even come close. I was actively trying to get into it and it was still a challenge to force myself to keep playing. The dialogue was even more boring, expository, and trope-filled than the average light novel. It is painfully dull and filled with UwU energy. So much stuttering. So many abused ellipses. I got a bit more than two hours in, and for the life of me, I can't remember a single character's name or a single bit of dialogue. I just remember the main characters as their stereotypical, paper-thin archetypes. I'm not just unattached to these characters; I actively dislike them. Even knowing that the game changes significantly later on, there is nothing that could possibly happen that would make them suddenly tolerable. I get what they were trying with this. I was even looking forward to it. But the writing and characters completely smother any enjoyment the average person could possibly get from playing the game. It's still rated very highly on steam. So obviously this game is liked by most of the audience it attracts. I'd only recommend it if you're already interested and enjoy the writing in light novels or YA books (no judgment here). If you're not in that group and you're on the fence? Steer clear.

It's Just Another RPG Maker Game...

I was looking forward to this, if only because of the art style... After you get past the art style, it really is just another RPG Maker game... They used a LOT of RPG Maker's default assets: The dialog box style, text font style, menu style, SFX, even the SFX when characters are expositing dialogue. There's VERY little music in the game; the town theme - for the ONLY town in the game - is pleasant, but the dungeon theme(s) are barely even noticeable, and the main battle theme, you'll hear so often, you'll eventually get tired of it. The Time Loop mechanic is basically just a fancy game-over system, and just forces you to redo a lot of things, making things overly tedious, and just PADDING the run-time of the game. You CAN save your levels - dungeon save points will SAVE the levels you're at - but if you come back to the same save point with lower levels - after using a Time Loop - re-using the save point will erase those higher levels, at which case, use a Time Loop, THEN choose to restart from that save point to return to your characters' higher levels. What's REALLY annoying about the game is the overly verbose text, dialogue, and tutorial hand-WRINGING. Anything you click on in the game makes one or more of the characters to exposit upon ad nauseam for paragraphs on end, whether it’s EVERY time you get an item – e.g., the same potions you’ve been picking up since the very beginning of the game - or reminding you how to equip weapons and armor every time you pick them up. You'll basically be reminded how to do something every time you need to do it, and you'll flat-out be told to use a Time Loop every time you need to do THAT, and they WILL use entire paragraphs to tell you. There's a lot of lore and world-building in the game...of places that you'll never get to see or go to. Otherwise, the entire game revolves around ONE town, and ONE dungeon. If you're FINE with just another RPG Maker game, by all means, have at it, otherwise, FORGET ABOUT IT.
