Description
On June 22, 1941, Hitler's German forces attacked Russia's 2,000 mile-long home front and advanced on Moscow. The Russians put up a fierce resistance which finally ground the Nazi war machine to a halt. Vital to the resistance was the Ilyushin Sturmovik, the IL-2. It was an anti-tank aircraft hailed by the Russians.
The Russians called it "the flying tank", the Germans called it "Black Death", and you will call it the most exciting and realistic combat flight experience you've ever had.

Why buy on GOG.COM?

Not only is this one of the very best combat flight sims on the market with a huge and very active online community and player base with tons of fantastic mods, but new planes and cockpits are still being created and added to the GOG version even though its been well over a decade since this game was released! That's the biggest reason that I suggest you buy this game. Talk about post-release support.
Fabulous graphics, smooth game play. Corny music but it can be as complex or as easy as you like. Seperate controls for everything or put most of it in the computers hand. I've been playing it for longer than I care to remember. Never gets old.
I've been playing flight simulators since I was five or six. Microsoft Flight Sim 3.0 and 2004 were staples of my childhood, and I tried out as many sims I could get my hands on at the library. That's where, in the mid 2000's, I came across IL-2 Sturmovik, and it blew my mind. The principles I had learned about flight were suddenly tested to the extreme; it wasn't just about being able to turn smoothly, you had to push the plane to its limits as you dodged enemy fire and attempted to center your sights on a jinking Bf-109.
For $10, you get an expansive playground that lets you fly individual missions, linear campaigns, dynamic campaigns that react to your successes and failures, and quick one-offs you customize yourself. Pretty much every major plane from WWII is either flyable or available to be flown by the AI. The damage modeling is incredible, and the flight model excellent, with every plane's quirks firmly present. There is also a wide variety of maps and nations to choose from, letting you fly in pretty much every theater big and small. Furthermore, if the already incredible amount of content doesn't satisfy you, there's an excellent mod called B.A.T. which adds a plethora of new maps, planes, and campaigns/missions, as well as fixing a bunch of niggling issues still present in the original game.
The graphics are older, but still passable in my opinion, and personally I'd much rather have butter-smooth frame-rates than gorgeous villages given the necessity of split second reactions. No modern graphics card should have any trouble running this at max settings, regardless of how big your battles become.
The one downside I suppose is that it's a proper flight simulator; if you're expecting something arcade-like, this isn't it, though there are plenty of settings that can tone down the realism.
Overall, this is still a fantastic game in 2022 and worth getting, even with the new IL2 games around.
IL-2 STURMOVIK1946 is probably the best overall flight simulator I have ever flown (and I started with an Apple II flight simulation in 1982 and moved on to "Red Baron" in 1991 or so). Il-2 1946 is very complete and approachable. For beginners, there are easy to use "easy" arcade-type settings. If you want to experience what a German retired WW2 fighter pilot called "this is what it was really like", then you can use the advanced settings.
If you want to fly almost any WW2 fighter that wasn't modelled in Il2, then you can download free "mods" from a dedicated community. Just Google the words "il-2 mods."
I flew a few warbirds in aerobatics (Mustang, Spitfire 9, T-6 Texan) and I agree that il2 is the closest to what I experienced.
You can play campaigns and individual missions or make your own missions. I highly recommend it.
