I really wanted to like it, but I don't. The artwork is great, and I love the theme.... I just found that there is not much to the game and that it is boring.
The style is amazing. Menus, cut scenes, world, characters, sound, music, even the plot, everything is really showing love for 50's sci-fi B movies.
The plot is one big nod to old movies. You will play as several groups of survivors on an infested luxurious space ship. Each chapter ends with multiple twists. Nobody is really what they seem, hell even the ship is not what it seemed either.
Each character has a special trait, that might not seem important at first, but in the end the least useful ones will be the best.
The game is hard. You cannot play it like normal TBS game. In each level are enough enemies to kill your party in a single round if you are not careful. It is in fact so hard that you will have to learn how to break it. You will have to use all the items and weapons and their special effects to exploit the game.
Make yourself temporarily invincible!
Shoot enemies behind walls!
Build army of robotic spiders!
Possess the enemies and make them attack each other!
Swap your place with enemies to make them kill each other!
Buff your healing to withstand multiple barrages from heavy machine gun!
Sneak and attack or go completely invisible!
The only downside is that sometimes the game tries to cheat too. Teleports enemies to your location (this happened just once afaik), sends more waves of enemies or put you on a time limit to increase the pressure... this usually results in restarting the whole mission and taking a little bit different aproach, to not get surprised again.
Also the music as awesome as it is gets repetitive after few hours.
There are ton of missions you have to complete. Money well spent.
I've got mixed feelings with this game. I love it but at the same time it's not an easy game to like. I will start with the positive.
· The concept is super fun. A parody of old 40s-50s sci-fi movies sounds amazing and it has a pretty good twist.
· Gameplay is fun. It's a mix of puzzle + XCom strategy. If you came here just for an XCom kind of gameplay, you might not want to play this game. Same if you just want puzzles. I've seen people complain the game "wants you to do things in a certain way" and that's true, but it's part of the gimmick of it. It's just adapting to it, you have a variety of weapons and tools to help you. Just try not to use melee weapons as such, try to use them combined with a tool, they are far more useful.
· The story is intriguing. To find out how the monsters appeared and how to solve the issue is amazing and catchy... at least during the first 20 hours
· Multiple characters. This game follows the story of multiple characters that sooner or later start meeting or gathering. Some are great, others are a bit meh and others "oh my god, can I kill this guy already?"
Negative:
· The game is TOO long. I've just finished the game, only 48% of achievements and it took me 40 hours!! I'm not saying that as a whole is bad, but remember my point about the "at least in the first 20hs" thing? In the last chapter, the story gets too long, only once in my life I've felt a game is just making the story longer just to make me play (and believe me, I've played many Ubisoft games). When you think you're about to finish the game, you still have 20 more hours of game, and I got this feeling TWICE in this game
· The multiplayer is dead. Imo, this game was first thought to be exclusively multiplayer. Some sort of Trouble in Terrorist Town / Town of Salem / Among Us but with XCom gameplay. It is clear they moved from that and worked on a story, a game that got so independent of it that the multiplayer became a free DLC, literally.
I do recommend, just b patience
As my title mentions the game has an interesting retro sci-fi setting and story, but the combat is bare bones. Overall, it just feels like a bad Xcom knockoff.
I want to love this game, but it really has a couple of major problems:
1. Devs pulled out multiplay features to sell as DLC after the game was launched with those features. Seems like a money grab.
2. The difficulty curve is a 90 degree wall eventually, which sucks all joy from playing. Many have complained about this over on Steam. IMO this is kind of a rare problem in most games today, but this game has it. This is mostly a solo story issue.
