HROT is coming soon and can be wishlisted here

HROT is a single-player retro FPS set in a small socialist country neighboring Soviet Union (Czechoslovakia) after an unspecified disaster in 1986. Those times were dark and terrifying and so is the game.

You start in a civil defense shelter deep under a Prague Metro station. As a proud holder of the military readiness badge you know what your duty is: put on a non-functioning gas mask, load the vz. 52 pistol and protect the peace and your socialist homeland from the strange intruders*.

  • The classic gameplay and vibe of romeric shooters from 1990s including a fitting brown retro aesthetic.
  • You'll find a shotgun, a vz. 13 SMG, a rocket launcher and even some secret experimental Soviet battery-powered weapons (e.g. a ball lightning launcher). If you run out of ammo, you might find the hammer and sickle coming in handy.
  • Handcrafted levels inspired by real locations with an emphasis on historical details. Every level contains socialist paraphernalia which nowadays can only be found in museums or your grandma's attic (Eastern Bloc only).
  • Flushable toilets and destructible light bulbs.
  • A custom engine written in Pascal imitating 1990s software-style rendering with unfiltered textures and polygon jitter.

A decent retro-inspired FPS

A cool retro shooter. It plays pretty good with guns feeling (and sounding) great, and targets seeming to be plentiful, with decent enemy veriaty on offer. One downside to the combat is that enemy projectiles didn't stand out too much, it wasn't that noticable in some locations. It would also be great to see more reactivity on shots, other than a simple blood sprite. The level is designed really well, with routes that loop in on itself. Puzzles didn't take a huge focus, either. A simple switch and/or key, nothing too taxing to take the fun from the shooting. The biggest downside for me was how bland everything looked. Sure, a lot of retro shooter wasn't fully of pop-y colour, but they used colours more effectively. From an art point, aside from the pixelated look, this could've come from the bland X360/PS3 era (filled with their brows, greys, and dull tones). Now I mostly like what I played, I did. Though, I'll be honest in saying that this game will not stand out for me. I already forgot what it's called, and in another day or two, I'll likely forget all about it. A good romp, but it hasn't hooked me. Gameplay = 5 Level design = 5 Sound = 4 Visuals = 3 Options menu = 4 Overall 4.5 Bugs encountered = None

Overall, not bad

Pretty simple gameplay. Unusual setting. In general, the game is much weaker than Dusk in terms of gameplay. It would be cool if there was not only a color palette similar to Q1, but also an engine (taking into account how good its current version is in terms of supporting modern technologies).

Impressive Game Engine (Visually)

I read that the game engine was made in Pascal to imitate Quake style graphics. the fact that this is a custom game engine makes it so impressive and gameplay is good too, the theme of the game is unique and hence it stands out among most similar games that try to recreate the feel of Quake, hence I like the theme.
