A worthy successor. Takes a bit getting used to the diagonal down slash vs pogo, but really really well crafted. I found a little cavern with an echo effect and spent a goot 10 minutes just jumping around to hear it. A labour of love and worth every penny.
While it's brutally difficult, it is in such a way that it rewards skill and slowly getting better. And the world is crafted so beautifully. And the music stellar.
But christ it's incredibly frustrating. Throwing your head against a brick wall is more fun. Overly punishing routes to reach the boss you just died to. Most parts of it are fine, but sometimes it throws that against you and it's just pain.
I'll preface this by saying I had only 12-15 hours in HK, yet I loved every moment.
Team Cherry really outdid themselves with Silksong, the art is beautiful, the stages even more so. Music is powerful. The combat and movement is smooth and impactful, plus a hell of a lot of fun to experience. This game mirrors an evolved Hollow Knight, yet it has many features that make it it's own game. Think modern Dooms.
Most of the boss fights/mini trials have been excellent. The bosses are a lot more fun than Hollow Knight's which already were superb. Their movesets are hard yet learning them and adapting is a dopamine rush like no other. All of the actual designs and animations were Eye Candy.
The game is harder than Hollow Knight, which I welcome with open arms. The basic enemies are a lot trickier and more fun to engage with than Hollow Knight's. Their movesets much improved and probably harder than some bosses from Hollow Knight.
Yet, there's a part of me that feels frustrated in this game, and it's moreso at some of the decisions than the actual difficulty.
Game has two currency systems, Rosaries = Geo, and shards = crafting materials. Sounds fine, but half of the enemies I have gone against do not drop Rosaries and only shards. Making the economy more limiting is not wrong, if done right but here it's not. Everything costs rosaries, a doorway, a bench, a fast travel point, etc. These payments existed but were rarer in HK. Shards drop from enemies that drop Rosaries, what's the value of me fighting the enemies that only drop shards? The bosses have rarely dropped rewards, this feels like a weird punishment from Team Cherry. Further requiring grinding.
Half of the basic enemies take too many hits. I like the more diverse movesets, but not 3x the health. Flying enemies are painful, especially a certain boss that spawns goons. Contact damage with bosses is 2 masks, why?
GOTY Nominee, yet I hope they fix the aspects that make the game frustrating, not challenging.
Finally finished it, and really enjoyed my time with it. Many great fights (the F____ S_____ is my favorite), movement was a treat, the economy is far more developed and lasting than in original Hollow Knight (important if currency is in the place of small rewards), and I *might* like the writing here a bit more, if only because having a pre-existing speaking protaganist is cool.
BUT. Balance might still be an issue, post-patch. What does and doesn't deal double damage is inconsistent, boss-hitboxes are a bit unpolished (especially when staggering), and many horde fights are harder than the surrounding bosses (especially when they don't drop the materials required to maintain your crowdcontrol tools). At least the movement's only "issue" is that you start out with a diagonal dive-strike instead of what you had in og HK, which is hard to get the muscle memory for.
There is also the issue of accessability with navigation. The compass still taking up an item slot isn't interesting, and I'm willing to bet the vast majority of players wear it for 95% of playtime. Also, some maps are too hard to reach for some locations, and it's simply annoying.
But if you have the ***TIME*** to get through all that, then you get a pretty satisfying experience. Definitely worth the money; worth the hype; worth the time. The "true" ending made me so happy, and likely will for you if you played the first game.
I think currency numbers needs little boost, not to much but you need a lot of money for a lot of things and the only way to get that ammount fast is by farming a zone, sitting in a bench and repeat for 30 min or more, other than that i loved the game in all the aspects including the farming one but is true that not all people that play this type of games like farming.
The only think i ask the devs is pls dont ruin your game listening to all the people complaining about the dificulty, that people is here only for the hype around silksong and find out that metroidvanias and specifically this one more are not their type of game and casue that the game is reciving bad reviews.
In my country we have a saying that i dont know the exact translation but should be something like "Coffee for coffee lovers", i think this games fits a lot that and i love it. dont make the game a walking simulator by listening to the hype people that find yout that is not an easy game.
I just read a review from someone that has bought this game and leaved a bad review saying that he didnt like hollow knight, the first game and casue this game is more and better from the last one he didnt liked this one either casue the same mechanic exist in the game, xD
