A well-made sequel for an overrated gem.
I can't express how much more I enjoyed Silksong compared to the original Hollow Knight. The original HK is overrated... and this sequel is overrated to the extreme. But, surprisingly, the game itself is a more competent Metroidvania than the first, in my opinion. I don't think this game is necessarily harder than the original, but it's clear that the beginning is surprisingly unforgiving. As you progress, you get used to the game and the experience becomes more fluid, at which point you begin to appreciate the wonderful exploration it provides. The level design and backtracking aspects are far superior to the original (even with the usual map-related complications: searching the area, exploring to expand the map, buying tokens to memorize locations, buying access to landmarks, etc.). There's a lot of fighting in this game, for better or for worse. Some is optional, some isn't. You'll get quite frustrated by constantly getting beaten up by horrible insectoid bullies, but eventually you'll get over it, like in any game. I understand this game ISN'T FOR EVERYONE, but I found the difficulty "normal"—just a few tough moments here and there. I didn't particularly enjoy the fights themselves—lots of difficult and endless arena and "flying" fights—but there are also many memorable fights in this game. Even though I had previously praised the exploration aspect, I found the hidden third act in this game frustrating, as I had difficulty unlocking it. I couldn't easily find the necessary triggers to unlock this part of the game, so I explored the map extensively until I finally met the requirements, completing several side missions. Despite its problems, the game offers a balance between engaging exploration and narrowing combat. At the same time, allows players to pause this progression to complete side quests and experience this insect-infested world. The game itself is a bargain for the price and is genuinely fun—and also frustrating—but ultimately, it's a good game overall. I recommend you give it a try if you enjoy challenging platformers and that "good" frustration. Like the first one, it's a great game with some unfortunate flaws—but I guess all our favorite games have their flaws.
