Note: This review is from a Hitman WOA trilogy fan.
Pros:
1. Graphics
2. AI
3. Good Animations
4. Great shooting mechanics.
5. Dialogue and Cinematics
Cons:
1. Most missions are very linear compared to the other games, some not even having any targets and the objectives being to reach an exit
2. No manual saves, only manually activated checkpoints.
3.Very action-oriented instead of stealth
4. Instinct being required for blending in.
TL:DR - While this game is definitely worth picking up on sale, you'll definitely enjoy this game more by playing it as a discount John Wick game, rather than playing it as a Hitman game.
I am new to the franchise and picked this up in a sale, but the core gameplay immediately felt familiar to Dues Ex: Human Revolutions (same developers). The game tells me that I finished at 11.5 hours but my actual time was probably closer to 20 hours with deaths and restarts taken into account.
The core gameplay is solid and offers a strong toolkit of options. The problem is in the level design which, on about 70% of missions, feel like puzzles with two-three right answers rather than a sandbox to explore and manipulate. Most of the more open sandbox levels are buried in last few missions of Act 2 and Act 3. I don't like doing thing the same way twice so this left a lot of once and done content.
The developers stated that they wanted to deliver a cinematic experience and this game does that, it's still a beautiful game with expressive characters, detailed locations, and strong voice acting. The story is detailed and well put together, but didn't really capture interest. If it were a movie, it's not one that I'd watch again despite the production quality. The various villains are strongly unlikeable, which is strong point, and the main character is a very cool antihero, but there's no great appeal to the others. Which is a problem when cool antihero is supposedly out to rescue a teenager who spends most of the time sitting around half conscious and barely gets any meaningful interactions. The fact that many cutscenes cannot be skipped is problematic on replay.
After finishing the game, I found myself interested in going back to explore the world and experiment with different forms of mayhem. But the heavy handed story telling and level design made that feel inaccessible. I think the missing Contracts mode would have added a great deal of replay value to this title but, unfortunately, it's missing. I got a good deal on this game in the sale and I'd buy again, but at this point I'm not sure that I'll replay.
I never played any Hitman game in the past, but I did played Blood Money back in PS2 temporarily, until I get bored and the console broke so I never get a chance to beat it. This is a first time game, but based on the videos I seen, I started to understand it's mechanic of stealth-assassin genre. I enjoyed it, but there is a part that kind of difficult, but intense at the same time. Regardless, I say you should GET THIS GAME WHEN YOU HAD THE GODDAMN CHANCE, LIKE NOW! OR DISCOUNT (whatever pleas you)
Steam or GOG, doesn't matter, but if it's GOG, it's DRM-FREE!
Just want to mention, this is my first and only experience with a Hitman Game, so I have no idea of the past lore/story.
For what I played, I absolutely enjoyed my time with the game. The main thing that hooked me is the multiple ways you can complete the mission, and maybe finding ways to complete multiple objectives in one run.
I am not the best "Hitman" in any respects, and sometimes I do "restart checkpoint" after completing a "challenge" to move to the next one but I had fun.
My main gripe is the lack of adjustment of Field of View for these types of games.
I have astigmatism and I do have trouble with it. Luckily, my glasses can provide some help to allow me to play up to an hour before I have to stop (unless I want headaches to set til the next day).
Though I did enjoy the puzzle mechanic of how to "solve" a challenge, there are some that are simplified and there were lots of times where the "hitbox" of the game seems to glitch for me. (Instead of the trigger enabling a silent kill, the button prompt changes at the exact moment I press it to a punch and now I'm spotted and have alterted everyone.)
So I wouldn't say it was all smooth sailing and there were bumps, but I still enjoyed it for what I experienced.
Would I play another Hitman game of the original series after this? Probably not given this was the latest of the original series.
So, my recommendation is. If this is on sale, give it a shot. I say there is fun to be had, as long as you are into the stealth genre or single player third person shooter.
4 out of 5. There is definitely replay value in it, but I'm not a completionist so I didn't finish all the challenges.
Thought I'd write a review, for two reasons.
First reason being I have read that this game differs quite a bit from the games in the Hitman series and many fans were displeased with that. I have never played any of the Hitman games so I have no frame of reference. I can only say that so far, I am enjoying this game a lot! Gameplay, graphics, etc.
Even the tutorial is not annoying :)
Second reason is that this game runs smooth! To me, that is a big deal. With many games I either have frame stutters or crashes or both, not this one. Or I need to mess a lot with settings or configuration files before it does what I want it to do, which is something I don't mind (the satisfaction of successful tinkering) unless it is to no avail. Not this one. I can appreciate a PC game that just plays properly (in my case, and so far), in my experience that is somewhat of a rarity.
My hardware is an old overclocked Phenom X6 1090T, a RX 580 8GB, 16gb DDR3, 360 controller.
A more recent game that also runs great on my old beater is Prey (2017). I can appreciate that!
