Hidden & Dangerous 2 is a first and third person tactical shooter that builds upon the tremendous success of Hidden & Dangerous. You lead a small squad of Allied soldiers deep behind enemy lines, to carry out secret missions during World War II. The gripping story line takes you to Europe, Africa, Burma, and other locations scattered across the globe. Each critical decision impacts you, your men, and your country. This unique blend of action, strategy, and tactics forces you to use your brain just as much as your trigger finger.
Hidden & Dangerous 2: Sabre Squadron
Reprise your role as commander of the elite Special Air Services (SAS) in World War II as you take on the Axis Powers in nine new missions set in France, Africa and Sicily. Fight through these campaigns alone or play co-operatively with friends. Sneak past enemy lines, infiltrate heavily guarded bases and outposts, and utilize superior tactics to eliminate the opposition.
Supply your squad with a number of weapons including pistols, sniper rifles, grenades, and bazookas!
A Fully Interactive Environment depicts the ineptness of drowsy guards, the shocking quickness of an elite German battalion spotting your movements, and the terrified look of the enemy as you shove the barrel of your rifle under his nose!
Complete over 20 missions in 9 campaigns from the lush jungles of Southeast Asia to the harsh deserts in Africa. Commandeer a variety of vehicles including trucks, tanks, motorcycles, and planes.
I already left a review on my Youtube channel. In short; still a great game today from a golden era for games. Like Ghost Recon but better with better graphics and superb for fine details. You can approach stages gung ho or stealthily and come up trumps both times!
Only shame is that there is not a level editor for this one (like the 1st game).
Note: This game does not support widescreen, and there is no known way to force it. It does support high 4:3 resolutions, though. Also, the GOG version still suffers from the occasional save corruption bug, where the game will crash when attempting to load a save, and the only solution is to restart the mission. Annoying but survivable.
That said, if a tactical WWII squad based stealth/shooting game with open maps and freedom on how to approach objectives sounds like something you would like, and you can deal with learning a slightly clunky command interface (and rebinding all the keys, the defaults are atrocious), then this game still shines, even today. And come on, at that price? If that sounds even slightly interesting to you, just get it.
It's an old game and you can't hide that, duh that's why you are here tho
Just check the controls first and you are good to go, it's a lot of fun even without the nostalgia filter. It doesn't hold your hand though, so it's up to you to fill in the rest.
I happened to check GoG just now before leaving for work, and was thrilled to see this gem on the storefront.
I have owned 2-3 copies of this game on disc, because IMO it is one of the greatest WW2 shooters ever.
Actual review...
Gameplay: 9/10
Right off the bat, this is where H&D2 excels. You have over-the-shoulder 3rd-person, iron-sights, first-person, and top-down "tactical strategy" views, all in a game from 2003.
Make no mistake, this is a tactical game; your characters are not bullet sponges, and a dumb mistake will end up with a lost teammate. It allows you to swap between control of your team, to direct each individually, which is key to being efficient (AI is not great, so expect to exert very granular control). The missions are large, varied (I absolutely LOVE the Pacific Theatre missions), and well-paced. The campaign is relatively long, but the variety of missions means it doesn't wear out its welcome.
Some examples of the missions:
- Capture a german sub that's stranded near a weather station on an iceberg
- Place mines on the Tirpitz (battleship) and an adjacent minesweeper (oh yeah, there's diving, and it's really cool). Steal the Enigma device from the minesweeper, then escape underwater
- Sieze a hilltop bunker in Burma that's been foiling assault for weeks
- Infiltrate a seafort and destroy the cannons shelling allied ships
Graphics: 7/10
They're dated, admittedly, but you probably wouldn't be on GoG if you weren't okay with that.
Sound: 6/10
Nothing to write home about. I was actually hoping for more from a game where stealth is so heavy.
Story: 5/10
This is IMO the weakest part of the game. The missions are cool, the objectives are neat, but THERE IS NO VILLAIN.
You are truly playing a game about a group of guys sent to accomplish strategic war goals. There is no evil nemesis. There is no escalation (some of the best missions are towards the beginning).
Ultimately, there is no climax.
Conclusion: I highly recommend this game.
