A masterpiece worthy of your collection!
I want to preface this review with saying I have never downloaded or used any mods.. With that out of the way, this game even just the base package is a WONDERFUL slice of yesteryear. Made by New World Computing kind of at the end of their reign, I think it was designed with a real vision of being the best it could be. The graphics were stylistic enough to be catchy for the time, and withstood the test of time. Later entries in the series did not fare so well, but this title still looks solid from a graphical perspective. Included here are the expansions as well, which added the Necromancers and the sort of unbalanced Conflux city type. Each faction plays differently enough that you get a truly unique experience playing as each one. Some factions have better heroes than others, while some factions have better castle types than others.. you definitely want to give various factions a go. I enjoy playing single player alot, bu this game really shines when you can actually sit with a friend or family member and take turns hot-seat style. Games can last a long time so don't expect to finish an XL map in one sitting unless you're both REAL bored and have no other obligations all day. Overall, the game does tend to suffer in oddly balanced maps in the campaigns. Some campaigns are just right, but Crag Hack's and a few others I won't mention here are just horribly balanced and frustrating at times. But it just makes you learn to adapt and find something that works. Fortunately for me, those maps are in the vast minority, although there are some maps which I think are far too easy, but you can always adjust the difficulty to suit your tastes in this case. Music is a high point for the series, even onto HoMM4. Particular tunes I enjoyed the most were the Barbarian Stronghold theme and also the Necromancer's Castle theme stood out for me. I preferred HoMM2's overworld tracks but the ones here are wonderful and really add to the atmosphere. This game is a worthy 5/5!

Perfect Heroes of Might and Magic.
Of all HOMM games, Heroes 2 is the most classic, but Heroes 3 is the best of all. It enhances the homm2 experience with a lot of good ideas, keeping what worked on the former version. Buy IT! I need someone to download my maps, lol!
