Great game, but wait for the sequel
I have very fond memories to playing this game at a friend's house with 2 other guys in the Hot Seat-Mode. The different kinds of cities with their special buildings and cool-looking creatures create a great atmosphere. But, nonetheless, I think you should wait for the sequel. HoMM2 is the best part in the series, IMO. So that's only 4 stars for this installment.

One of the all time greats!
I absolutely love this game. I don't mind the simple graphics, it works fine for me. (Just like Diablo 2) There are many different maps to choose from, a great variety of heroes and monsters, the strong AI gives you quite a bit of challenge. I can still spend hours playing this classic. I was lucky enough to buy this at half price, 10 bucks is a bit too steep in 2022... Anyway, it's worth a try!

Dated, but charming
On paper, HoMM1 should be rendered obsolete by later entries. In my experience though, it's a blast to play. The core game loop exudes certain tightness and elegance that the sequels lack. Planning and prioritizing feels very natural. If you're looking for a good introduction to genre, or just a solid, simple back-to-basics turn-based strategy game (with some rough edges), you can't go wrong with HoMM1.

A Classic Game
Even though the subsequent titles in the Heroes of Might and Magic series are much more complete games, the original takes what began in King's Bounty and turns it into a great game!
