back to hotk1-2 roots in a shorter game

hotk is a series of charming point & click / resource management / hidden object games without a timer. they're pretty much identical, and since changes in hotk3 got a lot of flack, the devs went back to their roots. no more respawning enemies or resources, constantly breaking items (they still break sometimes), mindless grinding or other nonsense. it's a prequel story, brent is a kid, presented exactly like hotk1-2. not much new to say, you're still exploring forests, mountains and caves, doing fetch quests, sleeping or eating to regain strength (hearts) to carry out most actions, looking for mushrooms and eggs, hunting animals, fishing, and now farming. merchants have a new interface if they offer multiple services or have quests, but they're not accessible from the map anymore, which was one of the very few excellent improvements in hotk3. sure, the world here is smaller and it takes about 4 hours to finish, but still. camping anywhere isn't possible here either, use firewood at certain locations to regain a measly 10 hearts. still no way to skip repetitive animations, but food consumption is instantaneous, can be done any time, and crafting 5 or 10 items at a time is possible now. as much as I like the series and I'm fine with more of the same, it's getting a bit stale. move on to new and more varied environments instead of generic forests and such, add some new mechanics without turning everything upside down, etc. in the meantime, if you like the series, it's a no-brainer, more of exactly the same, no surprises. and if you're a newcomer to the series, this might work as a first game, as it's a prequel story-wise, the cheapest (and shortest) of them all, and as always, there is a demo to try and see if the general gameplay loop is something you'd like.

Two hours of clicking

The game is simple and very basic, click on X and go to Y. There are very few choices that are made, and the game is very linear. The biggest management choice that will take place is knowing when to sell items. It does not seem to have after-game playable material. The storyline is okay, at best. However, for what it advertised itself as I believe it meets those expectations. I would not play this again, however. It is worth roughly $1.

Review

Just a fun, light adventure game with hidden object sections for a few bucks, should take you around 3-4 hours to finish and is great for what it does.

Expected player age: 'bout 8 years?

It's a point-and-click fairy tale. It has fine, though perhaps a bit generic story line, simple quests, short dialogs and limited choices. It's no Shakespeare, and it would be wrong to compare it as such. It's got no clever puzzles, no sudden twists in the story, no pixel-perfect hunt for items. Okay, the resource management is sometimes a bit too busy ("I need healing potions AGAIN? Back to the town," he said and opened map to jump to the city to buy some.), or a bit too annoying ("Time for the sleeping animation loop. Why does the sleep only yield 10 hearts?"), or a bit too unbalanced ("I killed a bear, why do I only get a claw? Where's the meat and skin, where, I ask?"). The quests feel repetetive ("The woodcutter is hungry again, eh?") - but I get it, there is only so much situations you can fit on "bring me X". You'll likely spend some 3 hours clicking on stuff and when the game ends, your conclusion will be near "it was not bad, I guess?". But if you need a no-brainer, say, for when you wait for the pot to start boiling? It's a stress-free, time pressure-free, brain-free way to pass time.

nice and easy

Interesting combination regarding mecchanic of the game. It sits somewhere between second and third one... Sadly no response for the resources, so you could have troubles finishing it...
