Her Story is the new video game from Sam Barlow, creator of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Aisle. A crime fiction game with non-linear storytelling, Her Story revolves around a police database full of live action video footage. It stars Viva Seifert, actress and one half of the band Joe Gideon and the Shark. How does it work? Her Story sits you in front of a mothballed desktop computer that’s logged into a police database of video footage. The footage covers seven interviews from 1994 in which a British woman is interviewed about her missing husband. Explore the database by typing search terms, watch the clips where she speaks those words and piece together her story.

Unlike anything you've played before, Her Story is an involving and moving experience. A game that asks you to listen.

Video Review - Her Story

Her Story is the detective game of your dreams, as long as you dream of scouring databases and testing your vocabulary. In the course of your investigation you'll watch clips of recordings of interviews with a woman whose husband has gone missing. In order to piece the story together you'll have to search through the database of clips using keywords pulled from their transcripts. Its an experience that may sound dull from the outside but is really driven by the strength of the story and the performances. A refreshing change

Forget what 30 years of RPGs has taught you about what an RPG is and role play piecing together events from these recordings of interviews following a crime. A reminder that 95% of games are tired iterations and cliches and the surface has barely been scratched in terms of what is possible if people are willing and able to be creative.

An Interactive Movie game in 2015?

IM games weren't very good when they were the wizz-bang new thing in the mid-90s, which is why the genre went like a bottle rocket. It just feels like another pretentious art-house piece that barely remembered that it's supposed to be a game, but forgot that games are suppsoed to be fun.
