Description
Hellpoint is a dark and challenging action RPG set in a heavily atmospheric sci-fi universe where the line between science and occultism is blurred.

Once a pinnacle of human achievement, the Irid Novo space station has fallen. Its ruins are now overrun by cruel interdimensional entities acting as puppets of the malevolent Cosmic Gods.

You have been created by the Author, organically printed on Irid Novo and sent on a mission to find out the unholy series of events that led to the catastrophic incident known as the Merge.

  • Irid Novo is a massive interconnected world full of mysteries, hidden passages and secrets within secrets - all for you to explore in any order you like. More dread and shivers awaits you as you travel deeper into the darkest corner of this forsaken colony.

  • Dozens of melee and ranged weapons and armor pieces to suit your playstyle. Every weapon has unique special abilities that unlock the more you fight with them.

  • A fascinating new sci fi universe reminiscent of classic sci-fi movies, set in the aftermath of a massive quantum cataclysm and complete with a deep lore and goosebump inducing soundtrack.

  • The space station orbits in real time around an ominous black hole that triggers various dynamic events such as boss appearances, horde assaults as well as modified enemy stats and positions.

  • If you are struggling, ask a friend to press Start to join in a couch coop session, or call for assistance online. The entire game can be completed uninterrupted in coop. The loot is shared, and the experience of local player two is saved and not watered down.

Off to a promising start!

I did not follow any of the pre-release news regarding Hellpoint; In fact I had never heard of it prior to its release on GOG. As someone who's played all three DS games as well as Bloodborne, I would say this does feel very much like a dark souls game, even down to most of the fight mechanics. There are some interesting additions to the formula though, such as an "omnicube" tool, which can make use of modules you find throughout the world to provide useful abilities (trail marker, flashlight, etc). I also like the "accretion storm" mechanic, which causes more powerful enemies to appear in some areas of the station at certain intervals. At the moment, there are still some bugs and crashes plaguing the game, as well as the lack (for now) of functioning multiplayer, but I imagine those will be fixed in short order. Overall,I feel my money was well spent! I should also mention I am playing the game on Linux (Manjaro XFCE), for what it's worth.

Fixed key binding, no key map

As per title, the game has no way to change key bindings. This is unacceptable, even in 1993 games had configurable key bindings. Also there is no accessible key map.

A solid indie sci-fy souls-like

A surprisingly good take on the souls-like game from a small indie studio. They got the most important features of the genre right: - oppressive dark atmosphere - slow discovery of lore and history - exploration of interesting environments - deadly combat with punishment for dying What remains to be improved: - stiff player and enemy animations (like missing inverse kinematics and animation merging) - limited amount of weapons and items as exploration rewards

Really thinking about it...

Because I m giving this game a full 4 star, since it got me really, really hooked, so much so that I finish it and unlocked the true ending ( and the final boss fight which I truly hated/loved it)... buuuuut with a more objective view it should be a full/almost more 3 stars... but again, I received it for free, soooooo yay , 4 stars ( actually, I would give it anyway, bought or not) First things first, I've read a little the other review on this website and wanted to clarify one thing : simple isn't bad, simple is actually difficult to achieve most of the time. Maybe someone could define this product as ''Basic'' but when you realize the amount of things you can do and explore, that argument really fells off really fast. Gameplay wise, it shall not come to surprise that this is a Dark souls clone, with all that implies, so if you are not a fan of the genre, you can still buy it , but it's not really advised. However, for DS fans, it is true that most of it resembles dark soul, but it does have something unique on its own, such as weapons and some system mechanics that are, actually, quite interesting. Speaking of other things, setting, story and overall tone of the game is, again, surprisingly good and quite immersive ( which is one the reason I've actually finished it). At the end of the day, this game, although lacking that ''something'' and despite a few bugs, is programmed by an unexperienced group and they did a really good job at it. So, Just don't hope to spawn ( mmm this joke sounds really forced) on another gamer's playthrough, since this game's online is dead..... buuut the single player campaign it's alive ( unlike most things one the game... gosh that's even worse) and well, just give it a chance.

Put it Back in the Oven

This thing is still raw... -Hit registration -General performance (suspected memory leak) -Bugged/disappearing saves -Unable to select online/offline (ties into save issue) -Lack of feedback on character/monster hits Since the above affect the entire game, it kinda kills it for me. Hold off on purchasing until they get this into a releaseable state. The seeds of a good game are here, but not the roots (yet).
