Hell Pie is an obscene 3D platformer that takes bad taste to the next level! The game sees you grab the horns of Nate, the ‘Demon of Bad Taste’. He is given the honorable task of gathering the disgusting ingredients for Satan’s infamous birthday pie. To do so, Nate must venture out into the overworld and do whatever it takes to ensure those ingredients are secured in time, or there’ll be hell to pay!
Luckily Nate isn’t alone on this quest, his ‘pet’ angel Nugget is there to offer support. Nugget offers his holy insight when needed, but more importantly is chained to Nate, so can be used like a grappling hook or swung around as a weapon. Nate can also equip horns he finds across the world to give him new hellish abilities.
Together Nate and Nugget will explore insane environments, meet tons of repugnant characters and witness some truly shocking sights. Hell Pie is a seriously twisted take on the classic mascot platformer, come along for the ride if you think you can stomach it!
Become a demon: You're Nate, demon of bad taste, the 8th deadly sin. While not taken very seriously in hell, he is feared on earth (by some...a few...2-3 people at least).
Heavenly support: Nugget the angel does not only look cute, he's also useful. Throw him like a grappling hook, use him as a weapon and let him be your guide.
Freedom: Use the extensive moveset to overcome obstacles the way you want.
Stuff: Collect things! Lots of things!
Hell and above: Explore 4 big worlds and survive challenging platforming levels.
Fashion: Buy outfits. You're the demon of bad taste and should look the part.
Random bullet point: Did you know? Necrophiliac ducks exist.
I've just beaten the game.
It was fun, just not as well polished than AAA games (some gameplay mechanics don't really work as good as they could have).
I still recommend it to anyone who wants to play a fun indie 3D platformer.
I tend to judge platformers on a few basic criteria:
- Fluid character control
- Non-frustrating camera
- Interesting (read: weird) worlds/characters
- Bonus: a story I care about
By those standards Psychonauts 1 & 2 are my top-tier benchmarks by a huge margin. A Hat in Time, for comparison, would be on the low end of my "acceptable" spectrum (but still within it) due to controls and cameras that I had to constantly fight.
Hell Pie falls somewhere in between. I really liked the character movement, the camera was only a hinderance in 2-3 very specific situations, the overall visual/humor/etc. themes were up my alley... but the 2nd half felt very unrealized. A lot of potential that if I had to hazard a guess was nixed for time/budget reasons. It's a shame that there isn't more of an appetite for silly "gross" games amongst the insufferable (and wildly hypocritical) puritans and comedy elitists because as a lifelong Ren & Stimpy, Invader Zim, Postal, Conker's Bad Fur Day, etc. fan I think games are the perfect medium for that style of humor. Still, I had fun for my ~10 hours of play.
So is it worth it? I'd say yes if the theme appeals to you. It's definitely worthy of being considered a competent and entertaining 3d platformer, even if it isn't going to necessarily be a nostalgic masterpiece. It has some flaws, but nothing that ruins it.
ITS DISGUSTING TO A POINT I GAG AT CERTAIN POINTS BUT I ENJOY THE PLATFORMING AND UPGRADES. THE LVL DESIGN IS AMAZING IT DOES HUB LIKE MAP AND ITS NONSTOP FUN SPEEDING THROUGH AND COLLECTING EVERYTHING. I WASN'T SOLD WHEN I FIRST SAW IT BUT AFTER GIVING IT A TRY I KEEP COMING BACK TO COLLECT EVERYTHING JUST WATCH OUT IF UR QUESSY BECAUSE IT IS GROSS
What I mean with this is that the gamehad a great setting to showcase and demonstrate the differences between angels and demons, with you bringing chaos and destruction to the lands during your quest, while Nugget be disgusted and appalled by your actions.
Instead you have a docile angel with you who's loyal to the teeth the moment you get him and his naive to a fault. There is no objection to what you do, there is no trying to stop, there is agitation. Nugget is supportive of you every step of the way and puts a positive spin on every level you play.
The game tries to explain why he is that way and teases repercussions for his actions, but nothing comes from this. The same is actually true for other points in the game, where an obstacle is build up but then never materializes. I'm not saying that the game should go down the route of a Final Fantasy, but at least give me something.
The second problem I have is that you don't really feel like a demon. You don't really do much evil during your quest and it doesn't help that the vast majority of characters you meet are morally grey at beast or evil themselves at worse.
As for the game itself, it's fun. Granted, it feels a bit meh at first, but opens up quite a lot later on. Especially the platforming becomes very liberal and you can usually find alternative paths to the intended playstyle of the devs, especially after you gain more charges for your swing.
The Hub worlds are also surprsingly large and the devs put a lot of care into them and gave each section their distinct flair. The game also rewards exploration, with you finding a hidden cave here and an alcove there, while keeping you engaged with the prospect of collectibles to unlock skill points or new abilities.
I also liked the depiction of blood in the game. Unfortunately, it's no Conker and given the setting, there could have been more gorey and gruesome deaths, but it's nice that it's hear.
On the other hand, I found the game a bit too easy.
