Description
Build your fleet, trade, explore and conquer
Helium Rain is a single-player space simulation that places you at the helm of a spacefaring company. Trade resources, buy ships and stations to fulfill contracts ! Dock at stations to buy and sell your wares or upgrade your ship, upgrade your technology to be more efficient and militarize your fleet to prevent piracy.

You will need to master both real-time action and long-term strategy: destroying a freighter has a direct impact on the economy, while declaring war will make your spaceflight environment slightly more hostile...

  • 13 playable ships with weapon and engine upgrades
Build and fly fleets of fighters, bombers, cargos, corvettes or capital ships. Buy new engines and weapons.
  • Fast-paced combat with Newtonian flight, localized damage and joystick support
There is no speed limit in Helium Rain. You can fly at half a mile a second while aiming backwards. Aim for critical systems in order to disable ships, kill their crew or capture targets, and don't fly into asteroids.
  • Complex economy model
Take advantage of a complex simulation of space trade to be the most competitive company.
  • A planetary system to explore
Explore around 25 sectors orbiting the gas giant Nema and its moons.
  • Procedural contracts, world exploration, technology upgrades
Pick contracts and build your empire to become the largest company.
  • Quick-action skirmish mode
Setup your fleet, pick an opponent and go into fighting action right away !

A world that feels real
Your ships have generators, radiators, weapons, engines, cargo bays or life support systems - they all work together. Every thruster on your ship plays a role. Aim for engines to pin down your enemies, or send them spinning around by destroying power stations. Most ships have more than thirty individual parts ! You can customize the most important parts of your ships - your main engines, attitude control thrusters, weapons and hull colors.

Your competitors are independent factions, companies with the same goal as yours - ruling the system. They will try to undercut you, or even attack you if you become a threat to them. But don't be too quick to destroy them, as war can break the supply of resources you depend on ! Attacking freighters will destroy resources, with the potential to cause an economic crisis.

Conquor space at your own pace

Overall this game is very good. It has a few small UI/UX oddities, but aside from those it is a very enjoyable game. You can be a space pirate, attacking ships and stations, or you can build a massive company doing many things, from mining to shipbuilding to tool and goods production. The game starts out slow, and introduces you to all the various elements nicely, like research, station building and trading. Later in the game it gets more difficult, with pirates and meteors threatening your ships and stations. You can build or lower reputation with the various other companies by doing missions, or attacking them. Each ship has its own upgrades which is cool. The graphics are very good and I was very impressed with the global illumination system, as well as the physics. It's kind of a mix between a RTS and a space shooter but it's done very well. You can build a fleet of ships and assign them to a trade route to make money. The economy system in the game is very well done, and like the developers said there isn't a single thing that is created out of nowhere. Everything is produced by something in the game. Also it's awesome that the games source is available on Git, it's great to see developers supporting open source stuff. Even though it is based on UE4 which isn't open source, it's still really nice to be able to build the game yourself and make changes if you want. You can download UE4 for free, and if you purchase the game you can use the assets and the source to build the entire game.

Great fun until the late-game bugs

A slimmed down version of X3 that's ruined by relentless freezing. After you're 10+ hours into the game, advancing in-game time to the next day will freeze the game frequently causing you to lose up to 30 minutes of progress. There isn't a manual save system and there's no indication as to what causes the game to save your progress so you end up being endlessly frustrated. I'd love to keep playing but I just can't take the technical bugs any longer.

A beautiful "space trucking" game + more

Helium Rain is at its core a space trucking (think "Trucking simulator" in space) and economics management game, which is shoving cargoes around from one place to another. When it becomes a bit more advanced, it turns to economics and managing your trading and production on a large scale. This may sound boring, but it doesn't end there - there is also action elements available, but these are luckily not forced on you (you can avoid a lot of combat by bribing pirates) and if you end up in a hopeless combat situation, the game is pretty forgiving, so this means it's a mostly "relaxed" game, until you decide it's time to not be relaxed anymore. So, it's much like like the Elite/Frontier series games, but a good deal less complex. In short, who is this game for? * If you like "trucking & trading" - YES. * If you like experiencing stuff in space - YES. * Bonus: If you have a good sound system, this gives added ambience. * Big Bonus: The bigger your monitor, the more beautiful visual experience you get, and this is a major factor in the game experience. If you only have a laptop display, this probably won't impress you much. :( I already have 25+ hours played an expect to have a fair deal more in the game, so I consider it a good buy.

Relaxing Economic /Space Simulator

I'm about 14 hours into the game, and I find it to be a low-key space trading game--but I'm playing it that way. It does a number of things well: economic simulation, space physics, graphics. None of those are stellar, but most are "good". On the down side: It suffers a bit in the UI area--the menu systems often don't give you the options you'd expect, or there are options in some menus that you can't select. The help/tutorial interface will occasionally give directions that are less than clear, It doesn't seem to have seen much in the way of updates, content or attention since early 2019. None of those issues are critical, but more along the lines of "annoying". Generally: recommended for those that like "privateer/elite" like games, where the focus is more on trade and base building than raw combat.

Interesting but not great

I am still looking for that New Independence War 2 with real Newtonian physic games. The IWAR series uses theoretical systems as well. That was one of my fav games back in the day. This is part way there. Best way to describe it from the few hours I have played to date is that it is similar so far to the X series. At $5 it is definitely worth a look. IWAR 2 still reigns supreme in the Newtonian Physics space combat sims though... If you want that model with build an empire type vibe how ever, which IWAR 2 lacks,, Helium Rain is definitely a good game. Note someone said docking was hard to do. It is not. Just need to get the angle right and your computer tells you when you are lined up and when you are not. Pretty simple.
