It Was Hack Work When It Was New

Heavy Rain was a cutting edge graphical showcase when it released on PS3 over a decade ago, but even then it was minimally interactive and, much worse, badly written. Like all of David Cage's games, it has pretensions of being a movie, but between the robotic animation of the mundane in-game tasks that make up most of its gameplay, the extremely uneven vocal performances, and the ludicrous turns of events the game expects you suspend disbelief for, it boils down to an amateurish mess even if you evaluate it purely as a story experience. Heavy Rain also deserves special mention for being a complete failure as a mystery story, committing the cardinal sin of outright lying to the player and changing the rules of how its internal monologue system for investigation and dialogue works in order to hide its ridiculous twist.

A great interactive drama

For a game that originally came out at the beginning of 2010 on PS3, this is something that really is a staple of that year (in a good way). I feel this is THE game that got people thinking that every game was becoming a "QTE, movie / walking-sim." As someone who likes to dabble in different genres and different game art forms, I choose to ignore those type of people. I'm also quite happy that this finally released on GOG. So what is this game about? Well, it's about a mysterious killer who kidnaps children and at the scene of the crime they leave an origami figure as a calling card. Sounds simple enough of the police having to catch a killer right? At surface level it would seem so but it goes quite deep. There are quite a few characters you will be constantly switching throughout the story and although it doesn't encourage you to keep those characters alive, you will want to for the very best ending possible (and a few secret endings as bonus for anyone who dares to take on the challenge of being Hero Master). The music? Oh man, it really amps up like you are watching a true cinematic blockbuster from years past. I could even listen to this outside of the game and it's already feeling nostalgic. I honestly believe gaming music soundtracks and scores are not getting enough recognition and this is no exception when it comes to games developed by QuanticDreams. Performance / gameplay-wise, I experienced one crash and a few freeze / stutters here and there when transitioning to a new chapter. I definitely recommend playing this with a DUALSHOCK4 v2 controller and use DS4Windows program specifically. M&KB, while not unplayable, isn't great. I encourage those to play through at least once and watch the "Making of" videos on the Extras screen after finishing the game.

A timeless masterpiece

I remember back in the day when it was released only on PS3 and I really wanted to play it(haven't got a PS3). I got to play it on Steam years later. The waiting was SO WORTH IT. Quantic Dream is a studio who always delivers awesome games. The story is one of a kind, dark and keeps you on the edge of your seat all the time. The characters are lovely. You will love them all. The music is fantastic, the main theme is just breathtaking. The gameplay is cool but I recommend playing it with a controller. It's better that way.

I bought the PlayStation version...

... and did I regretted it! Gameplay is not bad, graphics were top of the line back then. But the f**king plot and the stupid ending ruined everything! If you are looking for a good adventure, with a decent story full of interesting plot twists, LOOK ELSEWHERE! There is nothing more aggravating that a plot full of holes, and a story that knowingly uses the stupidest , most infuriating ending for a detective story. Yes, that kind of ending! Mystery game lovers of the world, avoid this crap at all costs! Don't get it even if its free!
