Must have DLC pack for HOI3

1) Expansions: Semper Fi, For the Motherland and Their Finest Hour The official expansions are mandatory to keep up with game development and bug fixes. To mention a few improvements fron the last one, "Their Finest Hour": Generals gaining traits as they fight, Aggression level for divisions, New Battle planning map, Covert espionage mission in enemy provinces, and building unique units: (Rangers, SS, Guards, etc.) 2) Sprites Eye candy, so not really game braking if you don't have them. But still, it's quite enjoyable to see on the map different 3D models for the different type of units you have built. 3) Soundtrack: Sounds of Conflict & Soviet Music Pack DLC The music is superb. It's one of the things that keeps you hooked in the game. It changes dynamically depending on the events in the game. On top of that, the music is stored on your drive so you can listen to it even when you work (I am right now listening to it, makes reviewing much more simple :) ). All in all, enjoy! P.S. Although I am owning it on Steam, I am seriously thinking about getting the entire pack here as well in order to show my support for the awesome DRM free GOG and to relay a huge "Thank You!" for the inventors/creator of this great game.

Krasnaya Zvezda

A monster of the Grand Strategy genre, it took some time for the game to become patched to what it is today. Nowadays HoIIII is a very stable experience and highly re-playable, as it is, with its portrayal of the nations (especially when you replace the vanilla flags with more realistic ones, if that matters to you) that existed in 1936, down to individual portraits of -almost everyone-, political or military, who played a part in their nation's role during the dark days of the thirties and forties. The last expansion, "Their Finest Hour" expansion capped it all off superbly yielding a superb time-waste of epic scale. I have one minor nitpick: The map -even though it represents the world as it was from 1936 onwards it is as flat as one of your mother's very poor baking experiments. The positives? The military hierarchy. Excellent, most excellent. Drag and drop all you like, to fine tune your OOB into your perfectly deadly war machine. Or make optimal use of what you have, merely to survive. The 3D models for various nations look okay, if you prefer models to counters (but really unsure about soviet aircraft carrying the red star on the upper wing). Such are the minor nitpicks, but now the whole experience is stable, the value for money rating is unbelievable. You may literally lose thousands of hours on Hearts of Iron III. Solid, rewarding and certainly not those who enjoy arcade games where an in-depth strategy tour-de-force will make a superior substitution...

A bad deal

What you really want are the three expansions Semper Fi, For the Motherland and Their Finest Hour as they are essential to make the base game playable and are required to run pretty much every mod. Playing the game without them is, honestly, pointless. However, they are bundled with a bunch of cosmetic packs, probably to drive the price up. Thing is, you most likely will end up not using any of the said cosmetics packs as playing with counters is just better and more fluid/. If you are using sprites you cant see the chain of command at a glance on the map, but have to check each individual unit. As setting up a proper chain of command is a big part of planning any operation , sprites make a trivial task a chore. The music packs are decent, but again something you can go without. All in all, HoI 3 is a great game, easily the best in the series, and can provide hundreds if not thousands of hours of gameplay due to its multitude of options and great variety of mods ( Black ICE is a personal favorite) . However, having the essential expansions bundled with a bunch of things you don't need is not a good deal.

Good Expansions and Questionable DLCs

First, the 3 expansion packs are the meat and potatoes of this collection. You NEED the first expansion (Semper Fi) to fix many of the fundamental flaws with the original disastrous release of the game. In my opinion, this gives the best "political" experience of the bunch. The other two expansions are mostly good, with several major positive changes to the combat mechanics and further but less critical bug fixes. On the other hand, diplomacy and espionage were gutted. The result is debatably the best simulation of WWII on the market today. It does allow for some significant deviation from history (a few things simply do not follow history, like the Afrika Corps not existing), but how well it handles those deviations is variable. The rest of the package includes sprite packs for various countries, plus music. If you like the period music, rather than playing something else in the background (or the original themes over and over), then that's up to you. As for the sprite packs, they were produced during the earlier expansions, and some people have reported that they simply don't work properly with the later expansions. I personally, like MANY other players, do not use sprites, because the counters are so much more informative, so I cannot verify the issue. I felt that I should mention this after several players reported getting entirely wrong sprites in THF, such as WWI German A7V tanks in mid-WWII.

Unplayable

I installed this DLC pack hoping it would fix some of the bugs in the original game. Now I can't see my units on the map. The game is therefore unplayable and I don't know what to do.
