Description
Pilot one of the most unique fighter jets ever made in three challenging, “what-if” scenarios. Start each mission with a review of your flight plan, targets, and orders, then select your armaments and jet into intense, realistic combat from either an aircraft or forward air base.

In 1992 the team behind Harrier Jump Jet created military scenarios around contemporary global flash points. The result is three fascinating, 10-day campaigns in the Falklands, Hong Kong, and Finland. The Hong Kong campaign pits the RAF’s GR5/7 against a variety of little seen Chinese fighters, including the Jian-6 and Shenyang J-8 “Finback.”

The game development team put significant effort into achieving realism, with extra emphasis on modeling the Harrier’s vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities. They had working sessions with experienced Harrier combat pilots and engineers at the Royal Airforce Station Wittering (RAF Wittering). RAF Wittering -- known as the “Home of the Harrier” -- is the main operating base and headquarters for the RAF A4 Force.

If you are an air combat simulation fan, Harrier Jump Jet should have a place in your collection. Run a few practice missions to get a handle on this unique aircraft, and then push the difficulty level to Elite and get ready for a serious challenge.

  • Fly an RAF GR5/7 or USMC AV8B Harrier
  • Three campaigns: Falkland Islands, Hong Kong, Nordkapp
  • Day and night missions
  • Multiple levels of difficulty for enemy ground forces and pilots
  • Multiple levels of realism for weapons, flying and landing
  • Single-player

Harrier Jump Jet was first published in 1992 by Microprose, a label well-known for developing combat simulation games.

Solid, but not great.

It is by no means a bad game, but not great either. Another of those Micro Prose simulators that improved on F-19/F-117 engines this time with campaigns that look like being dynamic. Namely, when you enter the campaign you shall get a short overview, and afterward, you shall be given your first mission to fly. Nothing has changed much since F-117 and F-15E Strike eagle, you shall get the primary and a secondary target - you should hit at least one of them, but preferably both, and in addition, you should make as much carnage as you can. If you do that when you are issued with the next mission you shall see that a few friendly units appeared on the map where before only the enemy stood. If you repeat your success a sufficient number of times, more and more allied units shall be on the map until you encircle the main enemy strongholds and earn a win. If you eject three times from your plane the top brass shall conclude you are not the man for this job and your career ends. There are two types of Harrier available - AV-8B and Gr.7 - but there ain't much difference between them. You would expect AIM-120 AMRAAM on the US jet but that would put it too far above GR so it is not possible. You would not expect GR.7 to have radar but it has it etc etc. With some training, I could handle everything on hard/realistic level except landing on a ship. Besides campaigns, you can play a single day or a single mission, but I never felt a desire to play so. When you exceed expectations (in the campaign you better exceed them on regular basis) game shall award you with medals (British or American, depending on the model you fly) or promotions. It is a solid game, but I would recommend playing first Micro Prose F-14 Fleet Defender game (also available on Gog.com) for a better experience, and when you get tired of it try this one.

Good classic, lazy publisher

After reading the few comments about this re-release I decided to give it it a shot myself and purchased it on a 65% discount. I totally agree with the review written by Nicktheblack, but I’d like to make clear the main complaints I’ve been reading about this edition: 1. I can confirm the manual IS included. It’s a 300-page pdf file. 2. By default, the DOSBox configuration for this game is set to run at only 4000Hz, and that’s the reason the game runs “as a PowerPoint presentation”. Just edit the dosbox.conf file and and change the value of the “cycles” setting to 16000 at least (the minimum required). I’ve been playing OK with cycles at 25000. 3. The game is unprotected, just type anything when prompted. Summarizing: a good flight sim from the early 90s that didn’t get the love it deserved with this edition. The manual should have been included from day one, and the default DOSBox setting should be corrected as soon as possible.

Unplayable - manual copy protection

This implements the classic late '80s/early '90s game manual copy protection method. GOG, please dig up the user manual and include it. Othewise, please remove this product from the sture and refund everyone who bought it. Tested in Windows XP, 7 and 10, all with the same results.

Missing the manual

The game is missing the manual, which is essential. Hopefully gog support will add as it was provided to them.
