Description
Hammer of the Gods is a turn-based strategy game that recreates the world the way the Vikings experienced it. The gods are a real consideration in the decisions made and glorious death one of the highest goals. Unlike other strategy games, the building of the empire is not necessarily the ultimate objective. Hammer of the Gods introduced the combat system later popularized by Heroes of Might and Magic.

The player competes against other players to earn the favor of the Norse gods and become the Hammer of the Gods. The player can raid coastal villages, conquer cities and then link them together by building roads. Next, build castles to protect them. The particular path that the player follows to victory will vary based on the "family" of gods that is chosen at the beginning of the game. Maintaining honor in the eyes of the other Vikings is important throughout the game. The four paths are Human, Elf, Troll and Dwarf. Any of these may become Odin's chosen leader on Midgard by completing his quest and ensuring the player's place in legend.

True Classic

If you want to dive in the art of strategic games it's a must have - especially for having a good chunk of experienced hotseat-fun with your best gaming buddies. And for getting high of their beautiful anger if they're failing. But beware, there's a slight chance, they will have you whining of it at all. ;-)

A proper GOG Gem

Last played this game over 25 years ago. And for it's age and basic level - it's a fantastic, cracking, fun take on the Civilisation formula - from round about the same time as Civ 1!

Well, it's hammer-time

It is Hammer of the Gods, so there hardly is anything more to say. Choose your race from humans to dwarves to elves to trolls, and conquer the rest! Raid, ransack and conquer thine enemies, and let them feel the wrath of the vikings, while you smash the saxon knight's head in with your troll hero with his gigantic log. Or reduce them to a pile of dust with your fire giants. On the non-historic maps, explore, colonize and conquer, just to have your best unit stack be killed by a sallying force of the nearest castle, while trying to fulfill the task Thor gave you. Very annoying, and utterly satisfying. Just get this game already.
