An charming game worth your time

Gurumin is an adorable action-RPG reminiscent of old N64 era platformers, feeling similar to Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon mixed with a 3D version of Ys. The story essentially feels like a childhood fairy tale, with a young girl going to live with her grandfather and discovering a village of friendly monsters who can't be seen by adults. It never gets too serious and keeps things light hearted and comical throughout. The game oozes charm and personality, with a cute artstyle and an unbeat soundtrack and well delivered chuckle worthy dialogue, which is good as so many games like it can end up feeling boring and repetitive these days. Gameplay wise you essentially have Ys in 3D, combat isn't overly complex though it is quite enjoyable. You can use different headgear for abilities like being able to swim without losing health, gain more money, stuff like that. It isn't that challenging so much as it is a relaxing title to kick back and play similar to the Kirby games, though the game is long enough to where you feel like you'd get your money's worth. If I had to find a few complaints it'd be that the environments aren't that varied, it is a handheld game at heart, and the few times platforming is involved it can feel a bit too slippery, but those are just minor nitpicks. The game also has controller support and also thankfully has been patched to add proper mouse and keyboard support. Gurumin can easily be picked up for a song and dance, even at the 10 dollar asking price I doubt you'll walk away disappointed. If you're into charming action adventure games or simple relaxing games I'd say it's totally worth a buy.

Adorable rythm based action-rpg

The voice over is English in this release, but if you can find the original Japanese files, you can simply overwrite the English files. I love games like this, it's got an adorable art style, good soundtrack, and I love the (Japanese) voice acting! Some of the english translations have been changed entirely from the original Japanese version (either that, or it's not a good translation)... When you first crawl through the hole to the monster world, in the Japanese version, she says something along the lines of "makes my heart beat" ("doki doki suru yo"). I don't speak Japanese, but I could at least notice that one. There's also one bit where instead of yelling a fighting move, the subtitle simply says something along the lines of "I'll help you" (I don't really remember what it read, because it was a completely different line than the spoken one, so I stopped reading it and paid attention the spoken line). So far, I'm not liking the translation all that much, and I recommend the Japanese voice over. As of writing this, the GOG version doesn't have great keyboard support, Steam has at least WASD support. So if you don't have a controller, you might want to wait for updates, or just buy a controller.

A must for any Falcom or Ys fan.

Originally a Japanese PC game released in 2004 later ported, and translated for the PSP in 2007. Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure can be looked at as a "Kids" version of a Ys game (another great ARPG series from Nihon Falcom). This game is an Action RPG Platformer, with a unique addition that requires you to attack to the beat of the music playing for critical strikes. --- The game has a great clean and colorful look (but doesn't bleed out colors unnecessarily like other Japanese games), that still holds up well even today but now in 1080p, 60 frames. ***I'd really recommend turning off DoF as well as the Blur effect & BackBuffer (flickering in the title/main menu may occur with this one), to get rid of the "fuzzy" look many players are experiencing. Forcing AA & 16x AF on your control panel is also recommended. The controls are responsive, and simple to use. You simply go around Hack 'n' Slashing your enemies to the beat of the music with combos, while going through simple platforming and puzzles. Please bare in mind that when this game first came out, there was no xinput. Although gamepad support was added by Mastiff, you might need to configure your controller with the game config. ***But I can confirm that with a 360 controller or wrapper, you shouldn't need to do anything besides changing [Show Forward] & [Show Enemy] to the Stick Buttons. The music was created by the Falcom Sound Team jdk internal band, which also made the original soundtracks for most of their releases (Ys series, The Legend of Heroes series, et cetera). So you can expect a great listen all throughout the game. A must have for any ARPG lover, or Falcom fan. **Review also posted on Steam**

PSP masterpiece now on PC

I completed this very cute game on my PSP system and this game was so good that I decided to buy this game for PC to play in full HD. This game only needs one last patch to fix some small bugs. This game much easier on PC. On PSP the last boss (optional) was very very hard.

Nostalgic and surprisingly good

I got this game free in a bundle and decided to play with low expectations, but this game very quickly caught my heart. The storyline is fairly simple and standard but Parin and her friends are so lovable and unique (even the antagonists!). The level design is incredibly creative and fun with secrets around every corner and it's open enough to explore but not so much that you would get lost. The combat is also pretty good: it's simple and relies on either rhythm or pressing attack while using the move keys. There's also an array of hats with very unique abilities ranging from secrets finder to stealing health off enemies. The bosses in this game are pretty unique too - they have quirky personalities and design and are very different from one another. Parin uses a drill as a weapon, but there isn't really any digging or mining in this game at all. To sum up, the game is obviously very dated, but it plays much better than most games that are released today. The graphics are quite mediocre, but they managed to make it lovable by adding a cartoon feel to it and the english acting is fairly wooden (at least at the beginning). It's one hell of an adventure and the ending admittedly made me well up a bit. I highly recommend this game, you're in for a major surprise.
