When life robs Colton White of all that matters, the only thing left he can trust is his GUN. From award-winning developer, Neversoft, and accomplished screenwriter, Randall Jahnson (The Mask of Zorro, The Doors), GUN follows Colton on his quest for discovery as he seeks to exact vengeful justice on those who have wronged him. GUN is a realistic epic action/adventure that lets gamers experience the brutality of the lawless West.
New and savage ways to punish: Stealthily sneak up and attack your enemies, use them as cover, stab and shoot them. Blast away and watch the aftermath, shoot guns out of enemy hands, or destroy with dynamite.
Extensive variety of missions and game play: Wage war on horseback, commandeer trains, protect prostitutes, collect bounties, play poker, hunt buffalo, and more. Multiple game play styles include: precision shooting, stealth tactics, and use of explosives. Embark on numerous side missions that allow you to master gun slinging and horse riding. Unlock secret weapons and upgrade your skills and abilities to improve your weapon and equipment performance.
Brutal realism: Act as a gunslinger protecting righteousness, or seek retribution as you face corrupt lawmen, warring tribes, cold-blooded outlaws, and ruthless renegades. Encounter legendary gunfighters such as JJ Webb. Employ a multitude of authentic weapons including: Six shooters, shotguns, Gatling guns, flaming arrows, hatchets, dynamite, and more.
Expansive interactive world: Play an extensive variety of exciting missions as you journey west across the new frontier. Ride on horseback through the scenic, yet dangerous Western terrain of canyons, mountains, plains, forests, gold mines and towns.
I am giving it a single star, despite the fact that this is a good game, especially in its day, due to the fact that there is a bug as early as Mission 3 (Honest Tom - the Horse Race). It seems that for some reason his horse moves with the speed of light and my horse drags himself. I tried nearly 30 times to pass this otherwise easy mission (I vaguely remembered it when playing the game in 2005 when it came out) and it was in vain.
Asking for a refund ...
Playing this game on normal difficulty, I felt like I was playing on baby mode. A lot of missions take no longer than a minute to complete, and if you somehow fail at them, you can instantly restart them & try again.
Missions are also far and few between as far as variety goes - there are only about three missions overall - kill a bad guy, defend a good guy, and the occasional mission where you get to do something halfway interesting.
Gun, as its name might suggest, is a GTA clone set in the old west. And having seen quite a few GTA clones up to now, Gun seems to be the best copy so far. Not that it says much.
Although you can engage in hunting, gold digging & poker playing, they're all easy and don't offer much of a distraction from the main game.
You can try to roam the map, but it's rather small & uninteresting.
As far as plot goes, it doesn't really matter. Not to say it doesn't exist - the game tries to be as cinematic as it possibly can, with its limited graphics, but I was never made to care for the bland main character.
And with cutscenes taking longer than the actual missions, I oftentimes skipped them. You don't need them to know what to do.
Sadly, for a GTA clone, Gun is incredibly rigid. Meaning you either complete a mission how it wants you to do it, or you'll struggle to complete it.
In many missions you'll have your hand held, with you having someone to follow, or you having to reach certain checkpoints.
It doesn't help that the first series of missions are tutorial missions you don't really need nor want.
My only other major gripe is with expectations vs reality. Having a game set in the old west I expected a gritty realistic take on an iconic era. Instead I got Gunsmoke and Bonanza, with dubbing that was either stereotypical or out of place.
I did get some enjoyment out of shooting 3 baddies in a row while riding my horse, hearing atmospheric music in the background, but I wanted more.
Also, I'd prefer less glitches, stuttering & crashing.
This was absolutely great in its time and it got me into westerns. It's worth a play-through if you haven't played it but after that the world becomes incredibly tiny, especially if you've already played Red Dead Redemption 1/2.
Just go for Red Dead Redemption 1 or 2 if you're not sure.
The story is set in late 19th century America, specifically in the Old West, and involves finding the lost city of Quivira, where this is lot of gold to be mined.
Its somewhat of an open world game, and the player gets to backtrack between cities. There are quite a few side missions as well, and completing these missions reward the player with cash, which can be used to buy weapons and upgrades.
The game has a thoroughly budget feel to it. It is a poor man's Red Dead Redemption.
The save system is confusing. It appears that you can save the game at any point, but when you load the game (and you have to quit the current game to do so), it begins at the start of the mission. There is no auto checkpoint system to go along with the manual save system. There were times when I forgot to manually save the game, and I lost progress. Very annoying. I would much rather have a manual save system, and a quick save system, but modern games have taught me to expect a checkpoint system, which I loathe.
Visually, the game looks alright. There is no support for widescreen resolutions. I played the game at 1600x1200. I have a computer that is dedicated to playing older games, and on a 1080p monitor, the game is very playable. I would not play this game on my ultrawide monitor because it would not scale very well, and it would end up looking awful.
By far the worst aspect of this game are the boss battles. They are horrible. It feels as if the enemies cheat, and have wall hacks the way can shoot you when you peak from behind the cover for a second. This gets really annoying towards the end. I had to find a way to cheese my way through because it was damn near impossible to play fair and square.
Its possible that the reason I had this problem because I did not play any of the side missions, however, that means there is a problem with scaling the difficulty of the boss battles.
- Bad boss battles
- General budget feel of the game
- Weird save system
Verdict - Worth about $2.
