Juan Aguacate, an agave farmer who stumbles upon a Legendary Luchador mask, must find the strength and courage to become the Hero he's always dreamed of being and put a stop to this.

Guacamelee! is a Metroidvania-style action-platformer set in a magical world inspired by traditional Mexican culture and folklore. The game features melee combat, parallel dimensions and same-screen co-op. The original Guacamelee! received wide critical acclaim and was a finalist for both IndieCade and the Independent Games Festival's Excellence in Visual Art award.

Key Features

  • Non-Stop Fighting Action. An extensive move list, advanced combo engine, and anti-gravity grabs
  • Multi-dimensional Platforming. Instantly swap between the Worlds of Living and Dead to traverse impossible terrain
  • Combat moves double as movement, uniting platforming and fighting in a way never seen before
  • Diverse, detailed world containing lively towns, dark forests, flowery canals and fiery volcanoes
  • Drop in/out 4-Player local co-operative play, featuring independent dimension swapping
  • Multiple boss characters (each with unique back stories), wide range of foes, and elite-class enemies
  • Spectacular player abilities: The Rooster Uppercut, Frog Slam, and “Intenso” turbo-combat mode
  • Chickens. Lots and lots of chickens.

A fun, challenging co-op experience

I played this game with my wife, and enjoyed it a ton. Great art and a fun setting really make it approachable, and getting through the story is simple enough, however, there are plenty of challenges to keep the hardcore players hooked. My wife and I love playing games together, and this has been one of our favorites. I will say that some of the challenges are a tiny bit easier if only one player is doing them, but you can have player 2 drop out to get past those sections if you need. Overall a really fun game that you should not hesitate to play if you are into local co-op at all.

My First Metroidvania

Guacamelee! was my first Metroidvania experience back on the PSVita. I beat the game at this point approximately 4-5 times and just finished my playthrough of the Super Turbo Championship Edition on GOG. Since then, I have played indulged a quite bit more in the Genre, but Guacamelee! is still a strong contender. The fluid movement in this game is easily the highlight, followed by the Mexican flavour and humor. Further, each of the movement skills also double as a combat skill adding up to some really interesting encounters. Where the game is a tad bit weaker to me is the boss fights. The bosses are fun, but none of them stand out and most are quite easy compared to some of the platforming and arena challenges. I'm glad this game is available on GOG and I am ready to sink my teeth into the sequel.

Beautiful art style

I liked the art of the game. The environment and with it the art changes in the other realm too. The audio is encouraging. Movement is smooth and makes fun. Learning the different skills isn't that hard. For me the difficulty on normal mode was quite ok and not that furstrating. Had to practice some jumps about thirty times but it was not all the time. I liked the mix of combat and platformer. Guess this was my first metroidvania style game and I enjoyed it.

Tough, but Worthwhile

This is a Platventure, but the hook is that you have Fighter moves as both attacks and ways to reach new areas. It starts out simple enough, and does a very good job of easing you into new moves and what to do with them. That said, it gets to be quite challenging by the end, especially if you're trying to grab all of the game's treasures. This leads to some really cheap moments, and some of the move inputs clash a bit with general design, so there is the occasional frustration. The combat gradually gets harder, too, especially if you're trying to rack up big combos. Though the time between hits is very forgiving, and you can get extra hit bonuses for killing enemies or hitting them with special moves, take one hit and your combo ends. Luckily, they're mostly for personal gratification, and if they do increase the amount of money that you receive - I didn't take notice - it doesn't matter much, because you'll likely have enough to buy all of the upgrades by the end, so long as you're diligent. The humor's a little hit-or miss, unfortunately. It's a pretty funny game, overall, and when a joke lands, its over-the-top presentation really makes it pop; by the end, I was still chuckling every time I got a new ability. A lot of it, though, is semi-funny, but mostly pop culture references (the majority of which are to video games) that don't make any sense here. Sure, with the luchador theme, a Strong Bad reference makes sense, but there's a broken wall with exposed bricks in the shape of a Mega Man sprite at one point. Every once in a while, they're funny, just because they come out of nowhere, smack you upside the head, and fly off into the distance before you even figured out what happened, but there are so many that they start to just seem out of place. All in all, a few unreasonable expectations aside, there isn't anything wrong with it; if you're looking for a fresh experience, and don't mind a challenge that's a bit higher for this subgenre, then give this a go!

My controller needs some rest

Metroidvania meets beat them up, a delightful combination of fast paced melee combat with soppecial moves and combos to bring pain to the hordes of the undead. And of course, secret hunting paired with tight and tough platforming, but not too punishing since there are rarely 1 hit deathtraps,. Most secret areas are clearly marked with color blocks that require an specific skill, so is not that hard to get 100% on most maps. The game is colorful and the music is upbeat, always keeping you ready for a fight, the story is the usual hero journey to save your beloved and the woprld from a great evil. And if you like easter eggs this game has you covered, is full of references to pop culture and other games, but nothing that disrupts its own identity. I suffered a lot of frustration during the hardest segments, but looking back I regret nothing, great game, gotta try the second one
