One of the most acclaimed adventure games of all time is now back, better than ever. Grim Fandango's epic story of four years in the life (or death) of Manny Calavera, travel agent to the dead, has been remastered to look, sound, and control even better than when it won GameSpot's Game of the Year award upon its original launch. Grim Fandango still stands as a classic of the genre, with unforgettable characters and unique combination of film noir and Mexican folklore.
Grim Fandango Remastered includes:
Repainted, hi-res character textures
New, dynamic lighting
Classic score re-recorded with a full live orchestra
It truly is a "tale of corruption in the land of the dead."
My brother and I landed on this game when it was new,
and we had no idea what to expect from it.
Decades later, we both agree it's worthy on the lists of 10-best Adventure Games of all time.
Manny(Manuel) Calavera is an agent of the Department Of Dead(DOD).
Manny doesn't seem to be able to fulfill his quota of selling departed souls
their deserved tickets to the Number-Nine train to the underworld,
so he goes investigating, drawing a demon(Glottis) and another soul
(Mercedes Colomar) into his investigation.
With voice acting by Tony Plana as Manny, it's an exceptional adventure.
"My scythe. I like to keep it close to where my heart used to be."
Could someone please explain this game to me?
I've never played Grim Fandango and this is my first encounter with it. I've ditched almost immediately, though. The performance and the game itself are just ridiculously abysmal and besides some wacky jokes and purely nostalgia value I can't think of anything else that could justify the praise this game's got. The graphics are nice and they had to truly impress back in 1998, but that's it. The gameplay, though, is just appaling. The introductory sequence, where you're looking for the best client, is terrible and almost nothing that has to be done requires any kind of logical approach. I got to the casino part, hoping that I will endure and eventually find something of value in this game, but then the whole game went apeshit - my character's model simply got busted, circling around with broken animations and clipping through backgrounds. Turned out to be permanent - the save file itself was busted.
I'm not going to torture my eyes with the grotesque that started on my screen and I'm not going to replay the 1/3 of the game for the second time. Up to this point the game failed to impress me: both in the narrative and puzzle department. There were some wacky jokes here and there, the voice acting is ok, but what else? Personally, it only wasted my time. Completely different from what I expected.
Truth to be told, from my observations, nostalgia value is the only strong point people defending this game nowadays are able to bring up.
Maybe, one day I will finish it.
The game is quite hard, but what is really upsetting me is that there is a massive bug in it.
The main character has totally disappeared from the screen and I cannot interact anymore with the environment. So I need to restart the game from scratch, and this is rather upsetting knowing the long time of reflexion implied by this game...
It tells a great story, but as a game it's not entirely pleasant. When I think about Grim Fandango, the first things that come to mind are the absolutely wonderful characters and the clever, heartwarming story. However, there is always a reluctance to play it again. You see, before you reach the end, you will have faced several frustrating, tedious puzzles with far-fetched solutions that often bring the experience to a halt. I wish I could give the game 5 stars, but even though it's a wonderful journey, there are just too many bumps on the road for that.
