Grim Fandango Remastered

This was awesome. Sure, not much has changed from the original - but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The re-recorded soundtrack (which was always great) adds some nice texture to the music. The new control system also improves a frustrating aspect of the old version. There is some lovely developer commentary as well. The light system probably required more effort than what it resulted in, but it adds a nice touch. Of course, being able to purchase and actually play the game is what makes this re-release the bestest. Since this game has pre-rendered backgrounds with fixed camera-angles, reformatting them into 16:9 would either require making all the art assets from scratch, or cutting off parts of screen. Doing the same to a painting would be silly, and I believe that is the case here too. It might be a regional thing, but the price is only slightly above other classic games on GOG, while the improvements that have been made are well worth that difference. It ran flawlessly on my PC, and I'm very happy to finally have been able to play this. Story, writing, art and music are what make adventure games great, and Grim Fandango excels in all of those. I can't recommend this title more.

The original was the greatest adventure game of all time. The remaster looks and sounds better. The biggest problem with the original was at least three puzzles that weren't necessarily difficult, but DIFFICULT to execute on the win 98 platform way-back when. The puzzles are much easier to EXECUTE in the remastered version. There will probably not be an adaptation of GD into a motion picture. However, I would love to be in an auditorium with other GD fans, watching a panel of newbies playing the game in front of us all on a big screen. Hearing the newbies commentary, and asking us for help would be really interesting. Not to mention seeing the incredible artwork on a bigger stage and hearing the mesmerizing music on bigger speakers. Somebody rent a movie theatre and make this happen!

Grim Fandango is one of my favorite games of all times. It has a great story and a really unique immersive world that pulls you in. I decided to get the Double Fine remaster and revisit the game. I feel terribly disappointed by Double Fine's remaster. As some of the other reviewers called this game Grim Fandango Rebugged, that would be a more apt name for this release. I often found myself forgetting to save and then having to replay a certain part I spent hours playing because of some bug that caused the game to crash. The game especially likes to crash where it transitions between cinematics and gameplay. The remaster in itself is not really that noticeable, so I find that very disappointing too. I think more time could've been spent on making Glottis' character model looking a bit smoother and nicer. It's a minimal remaster, and I feel what I'm left with detracts more than it added from the experience, which is sad. I love this game, but I hate this incarnation. Double Fine I expected better.

I loved playing this game in '98 and so bought it to play it again. Sadly I can't even get past the intro. My Macbook Pro (I7, 2011, OS10.10) won't get past the starting titles (Lucasarts screen) without crashing the computer so badly all that is left is to reboot. I'm not sure there was any QC done on the mac version prior to release.
