Description
Have you ever wanted to be admiral of a huge, sprawling space battle-fleet of your own design? Ever wanted to design a fleet of battle-cruisers so powerful they can rip all who oppose them into space-dust? Ever wanted to build a battleship with purple rotating radars and 64 engines? Well we have good news for you...
Gratuitous Space Battles is back! and it's approximately 50,000 times more gratuitous than before. A completely new ground-up rebuilding of the custom 'Gratuitous Engine' gives the game a completely new look, with beam-lasers 10x as 'beamy' as explosions 10x more gratuitous.
You now have complete control over the appearance of your ships, and can build them from a base hull and a bunch of adjustable visual components so you have control of both the composition AND the looks of your deadly starships. GSB2 retains the core gameplay of the original. This is NOT a standard RTS game, but a management/simulation game about building space fleets and giving them orders. You aren't the dumb schmuck who actually flies into battle and gets lazered. Leave that to those patriotic and keen young dudes from the outer-colonies. Nope, your job is as supreme commander in chief. Sit back at fleet HQ and watch the fireworks as you reduce the enemy to space-dust.
Using it's amazingly asynchronous multiplayer online 'challenge' system, GSB2 lets you put together a whole fleet and upload it, orders, formations and custom ship designs in one, up to a server where fellow GSB2 players can download it and pit their own fleets against it in glorious combat.
Design each spaceship both visually and in terms of internal components.
Completely new purpose built graphics engine.
Unique 'hands-off' battle mode makes the game play like a sports management simulation with space fleets!
Integrated multiple monitor support.

I run this on a new Macbook pro and the game is pretty much unplayable given the amount of crashes. Just like the first GSB; great concept, poor execution. I had the original GSB which became less playable due to constant crashing with every GSB update; I was really hoping that GSB2 would be different. Would love it if Positech would stop putting out half finished games for Mac.
I have been playing this game off and on since april, 2015, and have completed all missions on all three game levels, i.e. normal, hard and expert. the game is very easy to play. almost anyone can pick it up quickly. you add equipment modules to ships in design mode. you select your next mission. you indicate which race you designed the ships for. you select your desired difficulty level. you deploy ships on a mission grid. you execute the fight command. that's basically it. the program ai actually fights the battle. you win or lose. what's really great is that there is no time constraint on any part of the game. if you have played other space games, like I have, they are usually pushing you to complete something in time somewhere in the game. where this game can get difficult is when you decide to play yourself then you become your own worst enemy. you can try to win missions with the absolute minimum of resources and thus gain more honors, i.e. points. you can go online and try to beat the top scores listed by gsb2. if that is not enough, you can challenge other online players with your mission creations or play their creations. it's up to you. I should say that the game is still a work in progress. new features are being added to update it. you will sometimes have crashes, but there is someone officially working on patches and updates unlike a lot of older games. I like this game.
I really enjoyed this game, you can easily sink a lot of hours of enjoyment in to this game. the graphics although 2D are really good quality and the fight are incredibly fun to watch, except when you r loosing. it is addicting and fun, BUT this game is not for everyone. the game can get quite dull and boring some times specially in the beginning when you don't have a lot of parts to mess around with. I hope they make expansion packs some day in the future. Not sure what crashes people are complaining about, this game has not crashed for me at all. I'm running on AMD CPU and GPU, haven't had a single problem.
Half finished engine/mechanics, so lots of bugs and running problems. A ehh tutorial with a few levels tacked on. This does not deliver on what the description promises. Think thumbnail image graphics builder for spaceships, and you have the best part of the game.
Beyond the basic problems it have very unbalanced game play and I was done with everything in the game in about 90 min.
If, like me, you have a short attention span and limited time for reading, here's my synopsis: Excellent leisurely-paced strategy game with beta quality.
My wife doesn't play video games, but she was fascinated by the battles. They are spectacular and amazing! The funny thing is, you don't have a hand in the battle, it's simply a long-paced verification of your skill in building spacecraft and your strategies in employing them. Except for the battles, it all moves at your pace. The game loads and exits pretty quickly, so you can tinker your craft for a few minutes while you're waiting for your teenagers to get out of the bathroom.
The long part of the game is the battles. You can speed the game up to 4x, but some battles will still take half an hour. The game also tends to crash during battles. Sometimes you can tweak your battle plan to avoid a crash, but you shouldn't have to.
But, oh! The battles are fantastic, if only a spectator event. I find myself mousing over every ship as the battle commences, watching the combat wash over ships and erode shields, armor, and hulls. I cheer on my ships and lust after the shockwaves that cause chain reactions of ship destruction. I gleefully watch swarms of enemy fighters and gunships disappear as my fighters and gunships chew them up. I worry as the opposing lines of cruisers batter each other in an effort to take control of the front line as the dreadnoughts move in to assert dominance.
Unfortunately there are controls that aren't explained in the game. There are text entry problems in the menus. There is a custom battle menu that's not very intuitive - I haven't got it to work yet.
I love this game, but I also hope for an update that ends the crashing. I play on Ubuntu Linux 14.04.
