Gothic

I'm sorry guys. I have to say this game is not for me. The graphics have dated very poorly. That's not my main problem though, as the graphics ain't all that important for me. It's the gameplay. It's not the controls, those are fine. It's just, when I started playing, I don't feel the same satisfaction other games give me. The world, especially at the start, is just too empty. When you need to get certain items a lot of backtracking is required. I know you can loot some creatures and it's up to you whether you fight them or not. The problem being, there's no way of knowing in advance if you can fight the enemies. Granted, it's hinted at the manual not to feel to adventurous at the beginning. But little hints would've been nice. Furthermore, there's no map to display. Certain other older games too have no map but, in my experience it's mostly games of which give a general idea where to go. In this game it's like: Go here, go there with hinting in the journal of their general whereabouts. When they say go to the North Gate for example, I don't know what they mean by that. That's why a map would've been nice. Tl;Dr: This game is not for me. This is not to piss on anyones' favorite game nor to keep people away from it. Those are my thoughts and just a heads up for people willing to buy this game.

This is the first game I have ever bought on GOG and it doesn't launch :/

The amount of precofiguration and troubleshooting to get this one up and running is a bit aburd. Three pre patches (one of which gets flagged as risky software), mouse issues, and how easily it locks up GOG Galaxy. Not a Good Old Game - just an Old Game that really doesn't work without a lot of patience and tweaking. I'll wait for the remake.

Gothic is a fine game, but it is no way remarkable. It does a rather commendable job of establishing atmosphere, but the mediocre gameplay mechanics prevent it from obtaining true timelessness. It is by no means a bad game, but it is only worth the grind if you are really desperate for a role playing game fix. The are direction is acceptable, but the really standout aspect is the musical score. I found the orchestration and ambient sounds to be very compelling. A soundtrack is included with your purchase, so that is most certainty a plus. In short, it packs more than enough content to justify a $9.99 USD purchase, but it will most likely not hold your interest for any amount of time. I'd suggest looking elsewhere for a really stellar open world role playing experience.

Gave up trying. Even after following directions to patch it, it still would not work. I really wanted to play this game.
