War has been waged across the kingdom of Myrtana. Orcish hordes invaded human territory and the king of the land needed a lot of ore to forge enough weapons, should his army stand against this threat. Whoever breaks the law in these darkest of times is sentenced to serve in the giant penal colony of Khorinis, mining the so much needed ore.
The whole area, dubbed "the Colony", is surrounded by a magical barrier, a sphere two kilometers diameter, sealing off the penal colony from the outside world. The barrier can be passed from the outside in – but once inside, nobody can escape. The barrier was a double-edged sword - soon the prisoners took the opportunity and started a revolt. The Colony became divided into three rivaling factions and the king was forced to negotiate for his ore, not just demand it.
You are thrown through the barrier into this prison. With your back against the wall, you have to survive and form volatile alliances until you can finally escape.
Features include:
One of the biggest RPGs with over 50 hours of gameplay
A large variety of weapons and spells for your character
A living world where people go to work, sleep, eat and fight to survive
Fun game, though I died more in this game than any other game I've ever owned, which sometimes had me howling at the computer out of sheer frustration. But I always kept coming back....
The early part of the game is really tough! My advice: read up on tips and tricks before playing this game, and get a hold of a partial walkthrough of the beginning, at least. It will definitely help avoid some of the most frustrating aspects of the game.
Long time ago i bought the game but it was in my younger years and i tought it was too hrd for me to enjoy. Later on i saw it again resently I bought gothic 3 and i heard 2 and 1 are much better to start with because of the story so i Descided to buy it at Gog again, and i must say i was suprised how much you can do things likw choosing your own camp wich you want to join. And i felled hardcore because you can explore a lot of places but since your still green behind your ear you dont dare to go to far because most of the monsters will chew you and spit you out. The skill system is very realistic nit like other rpgs where you suddenly get better with a sword because you go up a lvl. Instead you must learn your skills and it is fun how the teacher tells you how to use your skill with makes the game give a more living breathing world. You dont feel like a hero but more of someone who is kicked in a harse bitter world and you need your wits and strenght to survive. I wish more companies make games like this. The bad side? Well it has a hard learning curve its not a pick up and just play. You have to learn from your mistakes and die a lot/ But then again when you get to the point you can fight most monsters you get the feeling of proudness that you have worked hard to get that far it gives more rewading feeling.
If you like a challange get this game and before you know it hours has past abd you had a great time.
I used to just play adventure games like Myst & Syberia, then I saw Gothic 2 on sale back in the early 2000's and it looked interesting. But it had combat!! I was afraid!! ha, ha. (I'm in my 50's, folks, and no die-hard adventure fan likes fighting!) but I took the plunge and I'm so glad I did. I was hooked. Did someone say Adventure game?? Boring!!! (except for Longest Journey!)
I think I played Gothic 2 steadily for almost 6 months, then bought Gothic 1 and then Gothic 3. Gothic 2 introduced me to combat RPG games and I've never looked back. Now, it's like the benchmark of what a great RPG should be (I was heartbroken when Jowood screwed up the franchise with Arcania). Gothic 2 has everything - great story & quests, fighting, magic, stealing, alchemy, lots of loot, different factions to join, open-world roaming, great scenery, great characters, great monsters ( I was so proud when I killed my first Shadowbeast!!) I've played all the big RPG's now - Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3, Mass Effect games, etc.- but Gothic 2 remains one of my all-time favorites.
For me this game is the best RPG around. You start out as a defined undefined nobody, and the game is generally very hard the first few hours of gameplay. The world is very rough, and little pink and purple fairylike can be found in this "medievel europe simulator".
The gameplay and story holds up today still, even though graphics are heavily outdated. Everything in the game is handplaced and designed with passion, which results in truly beautiful and exciting environments to explore and enjoy.
If you havent played this gem before, you should give it a try.
