The game has some interesting puzzle, though a few became repetitive after a while. Especially when you know what you have to do, but there a requirement to more through previous scenes to get to the image you require next.
The main issue is that the game is exceptionally short, especially the last few minutes.
To give an idea: My GOG confirmation email is stamped at 12:23 p.m., it is just past 2:30 p.m. as I write this review.
The game looks absolutely great. The puzzels are more on the easier side rather than difficult once you get the hang of it, but that's ok for this game. There is only one minus: it's a bit short. I finished it in about 1,5 hour.
Before buying I've watched a short part of a Youtube video to see how the gameplay would be. Because the game is so short, this does result in some spoilers. Even if you only look for a short moment. So be sure not to watch too long :)
I just finished the game and even with some breaks and thinking it took me around 2 hours. So many people will say it's not worth it but I really recommend it despite the short playtime because I never experienced something like this before. The game is complete art and it forces the player to think in a totally different way. Simply move some tiles is not solving this at all. When I solved the first puzzle I thought it would be easy but it wasn't since the game reinvents itself again and again Behind all of this puzzle solving there also is a story that is told in an extraordinary way as well. I will put it simple: there is no game like this available at the moment so if you do care about something unique and like puzzles that are forcing you to think - but not in the usual way ... you should buy this.
First off...the art direction is gorgeous. The soundtrack fits perfectly. Not sure what the story is about...as it's cryptic and more symbolic than anything explicitly spelled out. The game does have some interesting themes of the fantastical, growing up/old, and perhaps nature. It's not in your face but it's interesting to look at. It's just very stylized and is curiously fun.
Gameplay-wise you basically get four squares to combine pictures, sometimes layering or separating them, or connecting them side by side. A few puzzles were timed near the end but nothing to really test your patience once you have all the steps figured out. A few small snags in the puzzles, but mostly straightforward and not difficult. The game took me about an hour or two to finish so I'm not sure the bang for your buck is there in terms of length...but the game design is unique. I've not played anything like it. The art direction is awesome. So if you can forgive a game for being short as long as it's fun and aesthetically pleasing...then this is likely for you. If the length worries you, buy when it's on sale. I like that the devs didn't get crazy with the price from the get-go. $14.99 at release isn't bad at all and it even went on sale the day it came out too.
I haven't played a game in a long while. Work, family, life. This weekend I decided I needed a break from everything and came on GOG. I am an old-school lover of PC adventure games. Not the sci fi ones where I have to try and grasp technologies, not the child-friendly, cartoon ones or the ones where I have to keep the light on because I have to take notes. So when I came upon Gorogoa, I was intrigued.
First, I am so impressed with the artwork - it was a joy to see every screen.
I played this over a weekend and loved every minute of it. I have never experienced anything like it. The story unfolds in these beautiful drawings. There are six chapters. There is no text. No dialogue. Just beautiful background music. The interface is made up of 4 squares that you drag - to be side by side (that they might connect), or perhaps drag part of a drawing that now becomes two separate drawings. You may click on scenes to zoom in or out and the character can move between the squares. The puzzles are so clever, it just amazed me. At the end, the final scenes bring the chapters together, showing how they fit into the whole story -wordlessly. The GOG video preview shows exactly how the game works but there is so much more depth. I wouldn't say it is a hard game- you have to think, but solvable for sure if you are willing to stick with it. There are also little cues on what is clickable. Once you understand how things work, you will know what to try if you feel stuck - and you won't stay stuck very long.
I highly recommend this game if you are looking for a new gaming experience. The artwork and game mechanics are beautiful, creative and innovative.
I am sad that it is over and will look into this game developer and see if he has anything else in the works.
