Stopped Playing Long Enough to Review

My initial impression of this game was a very simplistic even generic party-based RPG with CCG elements, but I'm thankful to say playing further in I kept stumbling across new wrinkles in the gameplay, new ways to play and combos to set up. This is the kind of game you do get wrapped up in because of how customizable it is. You're always collecting gear to upgrade that gear with gems, enchanting it with materials you find, encountering events that need skill checks that exhaust cards so you need to rest to recover them...and THAT opens up a whole new mechanic where your party takes actions around the campfire like holding conversations to strengthen their bonds or getting unique cards. Get bored of your team? Collect new unit types and swap them out for your three person team any time you're back in town, and all of these have three unique types of cards to play around with. I ditched the relatively straight forward warrior for a blood mage and had a blast inflicting status effects like bleed and then crushing enemies by switching the bleed type to burn with another card so my mage could clean up with a well time spell. The animation is stylish and fun and always moving just a little to make it feel lively. Combat animations are visceral, fast and satisfying. There's no spoken dialogue except the narrator at the beginning but the music is nice and the sound effects on point. If you like micromanaging a team and their decks and equipment and classic dungeon crawling scenarios this is a nicely made and polished tribute and update of Jrpgs and rouge likes of old. This DOES have that Civilization addiction quality though where you will not be able to without great efforts to stop shooting for that extra level of experience to update your character, investigating the new dungeon that just appeared, solving the quest, seeing what new things are at the stores back in town...etc!

more of deck builder than a rouge like

I would describe Gordian quest as a rogue-lite deckbuilding experience. Unlike rogue like games that define the genre, Gordian quest provides players with a high degree of control over what is in and what is not in the deck. firstly, one can choose, for most part, what cards are in the deck, while in traditional rogue like games, keeping a trim deck is a matter of chance, which makes card removal valuable. secondly, the game allows one within reason, the ability to change out cards in one's decks if they so desire. overall, this results in a game where one builds towards their desired deck as the game progresses, rather than being forced by the appearance of lack thereof of key cards in to play certain decks. This by no means makes the game bad, it just makes it a lot more forgiving of deckbuilding mistakes than others in the genre. The story of the game is passable, with the main selling point the large variety of builds one can experience with the many heroes and their combinations in the game.

Good Game

Im really into dice , and card , hex move games . This one is top notch once you get into it for a while and figure the levelups and strategy of how it coordinates togethor .

TCG RPG rather than STS Roguelike

Rather than a roguelike, it feels mostly like a standard turn-based RPG game with TCG (Trading Card Game) playstyle. You control three heroes, each with their own deck that has their actions. You gain cards from leveling and equips, and can change your decks (using the cards you've collected and with a min. deck size) during any downtime. The card picks are rather scarce compared to other deckbuilders though (maybe once every 3-5 levels and couple equips). There's a lot of points of customization with your deck/equips/gems/leveling/talents/etc. There's a decent length campaign (stated 15-20 hours - though much quicker once you aren't staring back at your char to decide what equips/cards and level up options every few battles) And a realm/Slay the Spire like run mode, which really doesn't feel to be the focus and requires going through the campaign (or grinding) to unlock its relics anyway. Lots of characters with differing options, though not entirely balanced and generally fairly easy even on hard difficulty in the campaign. Much harder in the STS mode, where you both face harder enemies (esp. bosses) and have less chances to improve your char. The story, music, and art are all decent/standard but not that notable. The main draw is the gameplay and progression - though somewhat hampered by the points mentioned above - it being a bit easy on campaign and kinda hard to really customize in STS/realm mode. Overall quite decent and polished RPG but not compelling or unique enough for me to rate 5.
