Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
Just be sure to use an old tv or better yet a monitor, there are also a few apps that are good for adding scanlines to the game, if you didn't play this back in the day you won't notice/care about the difference.
This is why every old game looks "bad", same as in old console games, you just can't play them like before, so just add scanlines and it will look like you remember.
This one is the first game in the Gex-series, but the one I played last (after Enter the Gecko and Deep Cover Gecko). That means I already played the 3D-titles as a kid on the PSone and now in 2017 I noticed that this game is available on GOG for Windows. I buyed it when it was on Sale and started to play this 2D-platformer on my Win7 PC. In my opinion, this game is as good as the 3D ones (I like them) and the gameplay, graphics are still enjoyable (I play on a Sony Trinitron PC-CRT from 1997). The levels (TV-stations) are cool and each one has its own theme like Sci-Fi, Horror, Cartoon, Martial Arts etc. The Soundtrack is OK, but not as good as the one from Enter the Gecko (the best Gex-OST in my opinion). The protagonist, Gex has a lot of one-liners and many of them are even today funny and you can understand the references if you speak/understand English. My verdict for this game is 4/5 stars, because the PC version has no save-function (only a password-function) and the keyboard-controls are bad (You really need a gamepad, I use an Xbox360 one).
This was one of my first real platformers-- since Pitfall II on the Atari 2600. I didn't own a console until I bought a 3DO in 1993 or 1994 and bought this game, which originally came out on the 3DO.
I can't really compare it to other platformers since I haven't played a large variety of them, but I loved this game, the gameplay, graphics (for 1994 at least!) and humor.
I imagine it's more about nostalgia these days for this title, but I think it will still please people who like platformers.
I was interested about this game several years ago when it was for the 3DO. At that time I couldn't afford that console, lol. Now I finally have this game in my digital possesion, and it meets my expectations during that time. Its never to late to enjoy it if you have miss it before.
The original Gex is one of the best 2D platformers, but there are some issues with this port, especially with this re-release.
First off, it opens with a little pop-up launcher. If you're playing with a controller, you're gonna have to use your keyboard or mouse to use the pop-up.
The game itself plays perfectly fine with a controller, even better after installing PatchGEX, but you can't pause the game with the start button. You have to press the Alt key to pause, and to unpause it, you have to uncheck pause on the tab on top.
All this stuff was fine when it came out back then, but it's an issue for modern PCs and it's an issue for me personally since I like playing my PC games on my TV and on Moonlight+Sunshine as well as Steam Big Picture Mode.
Speaking of Big Picture Mode, I added this as a non-Steam game and test in Big Picture Mode. After I clicked Play, the game switches back to the Big Picture menu while the game is still playing. Very weird. It doesn't work properly in Big Picture Mode.
