Description
Become a made man as you vie for power in a Chicago-like town during the
prohibition era. Gangsters is the strategy game where crime pays--and with
dividends! You can don the knuckle dusters and “persuade” the local
business owners to pay you for “protection” services. You can get your
hands even more dirty and navigate in the cutthroat world of politics. Or
simply go for the throat as you order your wiseguys to execute your enemies
in the streets and show the city who’s “da boss”. Gangsters gives you all
the power you need to get things done.
Played in a vast city filled with over 5,000 individual characters,
Gangsters feature real-time action in a highly detailed isometric terrain.
The game sports an easy-to use strategy planning interface, to
authentically recreate the seedy, violent, and ruthless world of gangland
mobsters. Remember, real power is never given, it’s taken!
ATI/AMD compatibility notice: Gangsters: Organized Crime requires graphic card drivers version 13.4 or older.
Run illegal businesses: extort, intimidate, bribe, and ruthlessly whack the opposition.
Become a Godfather and control every aspect of a 1920's-era mob "family".
Break the law and taunt the system or go legit and get elected Mayor!
Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines CANNOT play this game effectively...
Because the mouse will FREEZE up in the actual game strategy menu... thus you are not ABLE to play the game and it is frustrating.
Buy this game only when they fix this or update this problem... period.

When I first played it with my boxed copy back in 1999, I was pretty intimidated by the game's complexity, but I played on and was rewarded with a pretty deep strategy game in the unique mobster setting. You start off with your own HQ, some territory and some of your goons and via the weekly orders interface you plan your course of action: buying new territory, extorting businesses, recruiting new mobsters and even lawyers, ordering your men around to explore the city, defend your territory or engage the other gangs. Your hoods have skill levels and different stats attached to them, so you need to observe who you recruit to your gang and what jobs you assign them. You can setup illegal businesses behind legal "Fronts" which are a great source of money. See an enemy gang property, send your mob to bomb them skyhigh. Eventually, like any successful gang, you get rich and powerful, and then you start buying cars and vehicles for your thugs so they don't have to travel on foot, you buy new, better guns like the Tommy Gun for them so they can mow down enemy gangsters better and that's also when you bribe and employ corrupt police although the FBI will still be on your tail if you're not careful.
Apparently there are 3 ways to win the game (go straight, become the mayor or wipe the other gangs off), but I've only tried the one that's the most fun: wipe the enemy gangs off. I had a lengthy war of attrition with the gangs before I even got close to the enemy HQs, and I had to get rich, real rich, have a huge gang, equip all of them with great guns and vehicles and then storm the enemy HQ with most of my thugs. Casualities will still run high storming an enemy HQ so do be careful.
This game became one of my most memorable games ever because of its gameplay, allowing me to roleplay as the "Godfather" and general satisfaction of successfully becoming powerful and hence I can easily recommend this to anyone who loves strategy games and are patient enough to get past the steep learning curve at the start.
If you've read many of the comments, I'm sure you know by now that the game can be lacking of many things. But let me tell you, if you're able to look past the (many) faults, you can find a real gem underneath. It gives you a fair challenge: to rule the city of New Temperance. It's an ugly, block-y, dangerous, unwelcoming and the only good bar went up in smokes because of an 'electrical malfunction'. But by god, it is YOUR s***hole. And as long as you can find 'honest' workers to manage your 'flower shop', you know you can make it big!
When you start a week, you must distribute orders to your lieutenants. That's right, most of the action is organised by your trusted right-hand men or women, and only occasionally must you direct individual members. But as for the orders, there are almost all imaginative 'business practices' you can think of: the ever popular extortion, beat up and smash up business, raid to get a few bucks from the local bank without the need to wait in line, and sometimes a loose mach can get a whole tenement block pacified. But you need to mach your force with brains, or you will likely only attract the scorn of residents and the watchful eye of the police. So you must expand with only the ever present threat of extreme retribution, without actually getting your hands dirty. Set up speakeasies masqueraded as respectable restaurants and casinos behind banks - after all, a Tommy gun can fire only as long as it has ammunition to spare, and that ain't cheap.
But as you set up a comfortable operation, have a few judges and district attorneys in your pocket and talk friendly with the chief of police, you may want to go to the next logical step: run for office. Here's where the thing gets good. As you must convince the people of New Temperance that you're the right guy for the job, you must also make sure other godfathers don't ruin it for you. If you bribe (or own) the local teamsters and control most of the reporters, you can be sure that the people will hear only the best about you. And if a serious accident happens to befall your worst rival, who's to blame, am I right? And as you walk towards the podium as the newly elected mayor, you keep hearing the approving voice of your late father as he tells you: real power is never given... It's taken!
