Description
Prepare for the bar to be raised on deep-space 2D dog-fighting! GALAK-Z is a modern, A.I. and physics-driven open-world action game, viewed through the lens of the classic 16-bit space shooter. Powered by the next-generation Cyntient AI platform, GALAK-Z puts players in control of anime-inspired spacecraft inhabiting procedurally generated worlds.

In GALAK-Z both stealth and skill are required to defeat truly intelligent enemies. You will be forced to outsmart enemies that think, react and cooperate like seasoned pilots! Master your ship’s sublimely-honed controls as you blast enemies, unleash missile salvos, and even toss your opponents, mech-style, to their explosive demise.

New features include Arcade Mode which lets you replay failed missions any number of times without losing all of your saved progress. Rogue Mode retains GALAK-Z’s original white-knuckle roguelite challenge that harkens back to the 16-bit era of gaming. Rogue mode will always be available if and when you’re looking to test your skill and bravery by putting everything on the line, every mission.

Players will be forced to outmaneuver, outgun and outsmart enemies that think, react and cooperate like seasoned pilots. Both stealth and skill are required to defeat enemy squads in a brutal game of cat and mouse. Prepare for an enemy that comes alive like never before!
  • New ARCADE mode with per-Mission checkpoints!
  • Procedurally-assembled levels
  • Physics based combat simulator!
  • Advanced enemy A.I for intense dogfights!
  • Scripted missions and ‘roguelite’ structure
  • Resource-based, progressive weapons system
  • Inspired by 70s / 80s anime and arcade shooters

Designed around chaos

This is a tunnel-crawling action roguelite based on Asteroids-style newtonian inertia where you pilot a transforming spaceship through tunnels choked with hazzards and 3 mutually antagonistic factions of baddies. Games proceed in a chain of 5 randomly generated missions. You have a choice of up to 5 seasons that from a story standpoint are a continuous narrative, but from a gameplay standpoint are difficulty settings. Upgrades reset between seasons, but unlocked blueprints remain. In season 1 games you can just charge in guns blazing and you'll reliably come out on top. In the higher seasons, the tunnels become so jam-packed with enemies and hazzards you'll need to dig into the game's mechanics to survive. This is where the chaos comes in. This game was specifically designed for emergent scenarios. Enemies come in 3 factions (prissy imperials, gross bugs, and psychotic raiders), they hate each other as much as they hate you, and they're just as susceptible to spikes and explosive barrels as you are. There's a light stealth element to the game, as long as you stay out of an enemy's clearly marked vision radius and don't make noise by thrusting, you can use your inertia to drift past unnoticed. The robot form of your craft has a grappling arm that's great for grabbing nasty exploding things and throwing them at unsuspecting enemies. To counter the greater risks from unpredictable physics, your ship has a halo-style regenerating shield. I've been playing with keyboard and mouse and the game controls just fine. The ship automatically faces the mouse pointer, WASD controls four directional thrusters. The ship and robot move at similar speeds, the ship can use a brief invincibility barrel roll and fire missile swarms, the robot has a bullet-bouncing shield, can grab and throw, and uses a lazer sword. The main downside to the game is while the cel-shaded enemies look cool, the stage graphics are drab and samey. I'm having fun with it!

Good game, missing features

It's not perfect, but it's a good game with a lot of charm. Beware, the description doesn't mention that you don't get any access to the online features. No leaderboards, no daily challenges. The only thing you can do in the Void is the basic Void Run. The only way to get online content on PC is to use $team. I don't understand the point of releasing a game DRM free if you're gonna gimp it from the get go.

Decent but unfinished game.

A fairly playable twin stick shooter game which does suffer from a couple of bad game mechanic decisions. The game is broken up into seasons. Each season is divided into 4 episodes. The problem here is that your health does not regenerate at the beginning of each episode and any power ups you obtain get dumped at the end of the season, only to start with your basic ship again. The game can be quite difficult at times and the only checkpoints are at the end of each chapter. But the biggest slap in the face is that the game story is not finished. You unceremoniously finished season four only to find there it no more game. This could have been a great little game, but due to some unfortunate decisions, this game is barely above mediocre.

Fun little shooter

Galak-Z is a fun shooter that feels like a cross between Asteroids and Subspace. Gameplay is straightforward, just blow up everything your path. Visually everything looks fluid and has a very "Star Blazers" or "Captain Harlock" vibe. Music is standard fare and fits the tone of the game. Characters and story are generic and forgettable, which is fine for a pure action game like this. Originally I tried to play this with my gamepad, but found it very cumbersome. When I switched to keyboard and mouse, control became much easier and more precise. This is a game that would highly benefit from Robotron 2084/Smash TV style controls for gamepads. Overall, I am having fun playing Galak-Z. It's not a great game, but it's worth a play if you like shooters and old-school 1970s Japanimation.

A rewardingly playable game

This game is simply fun to play. You need to figure out how to adapt your strategies to deal with enemies -- while I am successful 75% of the time by keeping my distance and using space and speed to my advantage, some need me to swap to the mech and use my shield. If I were someone who wanted to use my mech all the time the situation would be reversed: I'd have to use lasers and juke in my ship against some enemies. There is enough randomness in here to make attempting each level a careful enterprise in searching and ensuring you don't get overwhelmed. Overall I've realised each death was my fault, and I've had fun punishing the various nasty enemies which have got in my way. This is a game which I can wholeheartedly recommend.
