I don't believe my own eyes - not only this game got a modern re-release, but it even comes with multi-language translation.
One of the funniest P&C games I ever played. It's doing to the medieval fantasy what Monkey Island series was doing to pirate genre. And unlike Monkey Island it doesn't come with puzzles that are language-specific.
I love games with cartoon graphics and humour like this one has. The story, the characters and the looks are fantastic!
But there are some elements in this game that drove me up the wall: about a dozen times you need to react very, very fast in order to gain control of some item or to make something work. And you not only need to be very, very fast, but you also need to be able to position the mouse very, very precisely within a very small amount of time!
And this required technique is absolutely crazy some times. For example: you need to cast a spell on a person, to make this person drop an item. Then you have less than half a second to position the mouse very precisely where the very small item will fall, and right click and choose "take", before that person will lift the item up again. After that split of a second you will have to try the hole procedure again!
I would not call this an "easy user interface"!
If you're suffering from any handicap concerning the use of a mouse, this game will not be much fun to you! Even if you're not physically impaired, but your mouse is slightly lagging, like in my case, these situations will drive you crazy!
So be warned:
Yes: it's a "point & click" adventure with funny riddles, cute characters and very much humour!
No: the game can not be played very relaxing all the time! It requires a very good coordination of your hand and and your eye and you need to be able to react very quickly in many cases!
The game starts well and is quite enjoyable for the first 4-5 hours. After the first 4-5 hours you run out of normal puzzles and are left with random point-and-click until it succeeds. After the halfway point there is very little direction and more and more puzzles make less and less sense. Towards the end there is only one puzzle at a time and if you don't get it immediately you can't distract yourself solving other puzzles.
Overall the first 5 hours were great then I got tired in the second half and used a walkthrough more and more.
I bought this game, because I got it many years ago for Christmas and never got very far with it as a kid. I felt like as an adult I'll be able to get through it, but alas, it is nonsensical.
Good, if you're patient or want a nostalgia trip.
I have found a lot of flaws to this game...
- Artwork, background artwork is often correct and nice, but animated characters are poorly drawn and poorly animated. Just for example, at one point there is a character which is tagged as "ugly princess", but in all honesty, it is one of the less hideous characters of the game.
- Puzzles are made artificially difficult, by providing clues only once (if you want to redo actions providing clues, most of the time, you won't get it again) and scarce. Solutions which would seem to make sense do not work and do not provide additional hint on what you would have to do.
- Some reviewers found that the humor was good, but I did not find it fun. Clearly not to the level of what I could get with non-serious LucasArts games for instance.
- You are just a jerk for the poet. I will not tell the details to not provide spoils, but really I did not want to do what the game forced me to do.
- There is a long and boring introduction presented as a monologue by some hideously drawn and animated character. When the game start you spawn abruptely in a graveyard, without having much context excepted the blahblah of that intro character. Likewise for the ending.
