Couldn't get into it

I can't say anything for the original. I've not played it (as a kid back then, I didn't have a plethora of games to play). For this anniversary edition, I am having a hard time not grimacing at the poor quality of voice acting this game has. I can't get past the early part of the game either. The puzzle with the mime in the park was not fun at all. I knew something with the mime and the people who he annoyed had something to do with this part, but I had to resort of hints to figure out what I was supposed to do with him. Finally, I just got fed up of him getting distracted by all the other groups that I simply had it with this game (yes, I know you're supposed to lead him to the cop without "nudging" the other people in the park, but couldn't manage to avoid them). If I am not having fun with the puzzles from the beginning, I doubt I'll enjoy the rest of it. I'd rather buy another adventure game more engaging.

Badly broken and buggy

I have not played the original but picked this up because point and click adventure games are a lost art. The art style, music, and graphics are all very well done, and the interface, while a bit on the slow "90s game design" side, is easy to use and unobtrusive. Others have mentioned the voice acting, which is a bit ridiculous and exaggerated, but never harms the game's tone. However, my experience with this title was quite limited because of the bugs. There is a persistent freeze/crash bug that has halted my progress very early in the game and I would warn potential buyers of this issue (it may be related to ATI Radeon cards). Apparently, this is a common problem with this game, which may have needed a little more time in testing before it was released. Even on hardware that can more than handle the game, it crashes constantly. If you're interested, perhaps the original would be a better bet. I have played the sequel and can recommend that.

A classic with improvement.

They kept the original script. Gabrille hasnt been turned into a diverse female and new voice actors almost sound the same.

Excellent remake!

This is flawless a remake! Combines being true to the original while making improvements and modernizing. And its visually stunning! Being a hardcore fan of the original, I'm surprised to say that the new voice-over cast is a success. Especially happy to see the essence of Gabriel's cocky New Orleans character being intact. I would also mention Grace, Dr John, Mosely and Frick as outstanding performances. Love the remastered music. Couldn't be more happy with this 20th anniversary edition! Visually its a balanced mix of photo and painted textures, blended with pre-rendered backgrounds and real-time props & characters. A nice touch is the ambient atmospheric particles & lighting effects. The bonus option to view old concept art from the different locations, combined with info and audio interviews with the original developers is a nice addition for fans of the old game. I would highly recommend this game for adventure fans, looking for a story driven game. If you are already a fan of Gabriel Knight, what are you waiting for?

Very good remake but not the original...

The Gabriel Knight series is one of my favourites in the gaming world, so when I heard about this remake I pre-ordered. It's been very well done, but as a fan of the original I have to say it's lost some of its charm. Going from a 2D layout to a 3D one means some things had to be cut. For example, Gabriel can no longer climb the ladder in the book store, but Grace still tells him to "get down". Another one is that Gabriel no longer hugs his Gran when he goes to see her. These are small things but I feel it was a shame to omit them. The story is the same, with a few minor changes in puzzle item locations, and the inclusion of a few new puzzles and screens to keep it fresh for returning players like myself. The screens have been faithfully recreated and updated for our modern platforms with HD and the music has been amazingly remastered. The voice actors do an awesome job, although a part of me misses Tim Curry as Gabriel. Overall, I really enjoyed re-playing the original story in its updated form, although I can't help but feel the time put into making this would have been better spent on giving us a Gabriel Knight 4...
