Furi

I didn't even know you could have a game with only boss battles before I played Furi. I finished it in one sitting, so it's not a long game, but because there is little downtime between fights (and I personally found the downtime very atmosphere-building), there's arguably a lot of game packed into the playthrough time. The gameplay is punishing, but the mechanics are rock-solid and not overcomplicated. And then there's the music. The soundtrack earned a permanent place in my phone's playlist. :) Definitely recommended to anyone who likes a brawler, and isn't afraid of the feeling of wanting to throw their controller through the window (no, not OUT the window; THROUGH it).

Furi is an excellent boss rush game, it stays focused on meeting interesting characters and defeating them. The graphics and soundtrack are fitting. The controls are responsive and customizable. There are several endings and difficulty modes. The game has bullet-hell sequences, which I didn't like much, but can't count as an absolutely negative aspect. In some battles it's hard to tell the difference between boss' projectiles and healing orbs - both glow very brightly and move similarly. One phase in one battle requires to use mouse for dash direction, because it is impossible to move in that direction on keyboard (i.e. it's about 60 degrees, KB allows 45).

You know those MGS/Platinum bosses that you can't beat until your learned their patterns and brushed up your mechanics a little? Furi is basically about twelve of those back to back. Not as difficult as some reviewers make it out to be, at least on the normal difficulty, but you might want to skip this one if dying ten times or so to overcome a hurdle equals "torture" to you. Alternatively, even if it does, it might be a fun way to build an average attention span. Give it some thought.

Furi has many things to like, the artstyle the soundtrack and in many places the boss fight design. But for me it missed in a couple main things, first of all the fights are mostly scripted meaning that you can't damage the boss if the game doesn't allow it which gets old by the later half of the game and second again in mostly the later boss fights some things feel too arcade-y like the game tries to steal my quarters which i didn't really enjoy! I have to admit that i'm not especially good in these types of games and i still think that Furi is a good game if you are the right person! Minor complains, sometimes my inputs felt delayed and the flash that animates the attack didn't always felt timed correctly so many times it confused me insteaf of helping, also it kinda felt like i was missing a few i-frames or that the area i needed to dodge was pixel perfect but my input had a delay. All and all good game, 8/10 is a fair assessment but check a gameplay video of the first half hour before you buy to see if it fits your preference and style!

100000/10 soundtrack, gun goes pew pew, parry feels good af 10/10 would recommend
