Outstanding

Frozen Synapse is an outstanding little strategy game. It operates on a play by email turn system, which permits a player to take plenty of time to plot their actions. As a result, games can last anywhere from ten minutes to two weeks. It fast won me over as I was able to play as many matches as a wished while entering my moves in my free time throughout the day. The players are also granted almost total freedom of actions, which makes all the difference in a game where even the smallest and most subtle movements can determine if a match is won or lost. However, this does not create a daunting learning curve as the game includes the ability to plot out a turn and simulate the results based upon what you expect your opponent to do. In this way, you can plot out the worst case scenario of your opponents potential moves and witness the results. When, after running simulations and plotting your final actions, you commit to them. After your opponent does likewise, the turns will be executed at the same time, and you evaluate the results. The game also utilizes an exceptionally simple aesthetic. No useless clutter on the maps, and no distractions. The result is neither bland nor boring, but rather a beautiful simplicity that matches the gameplay well. This when coupled with the fantastic soundtrack by Nervous_Testpilot, supplies a wonderful atmosphere for the game. Finally it is important to note that Frozen Synapse has fortunately retained a small devoted group of players. This ensures that matches can still be found online with relative ease. I enjoyed Frozen Synapse immensely, and if you have an affinity for strategy games, then this one is certainly worth your time.

Very enjoyable, but...

Yes, this game's combat mechanics are great. It allows for all types of tactics the player can think of. The interface is simple yet elegant. 100% top-down view; graphics stripped down to almost symbolic values yet very apt at representing diverse fields of operations. Campaign; skirmish - offline - and multiplayer onlne. Just jump in and out at anytime; play a mission or just a few moves. Personally I do consider this game to be a nice, sympathetic - extra copy for a friend - addition to my library. Why only four stars then? To me, despite the forementioned pro's this game feels as if it would have been a great combat system incorporated into another game. Despite the campaign it feels very *lightweight*. But that can be me.

Frozen Synapse (Original Game)

I played this when it was first released, and suffered the "End Game Bug". After many hours of struggle and finally getting to the final move on the final level in which I stormed the center of the batttlescape to win the game, instead the game killed off my key remaining soldiers and robbed me of my hard earned progress and positioned my remaining units away from the area of the map that was to be entered to win. With this repositioning and loss of my players, the game could not be won. A number of others reported this same frustrating scenario to the developers and no fix that I am aware of was ever offered. Other than this one MAJOR malfunction, the game was a well laid out, enjoyable, and a real challenge. However, this goes down as one of the most frustrating games I have ever played through to the end, and lost, because of a glitch that never was addressed by the developers.

Best Tactical Shooter I've Played

If you're into strategy, this is it. You plot your actions and then you see them play out in real-time. You have snipers, RPGers, shotgunners, assault riflers and often an unarmed person to protect or slay. You position, give them orders, and hope for the best. If you haven't played this game, get it. There's nothing else out there quite like it.

Very interesting, but not delivering

The feel of the game is perfect, the story is interesting, the gameplay innovative, but... The difficulty and randomness are not balanced. Some missions are so easy, you get not much enjoyment for winning, while others are so frustratingly random and tough, that you just want to uninstall. Which I did. All in all, it's a great idea in a poor packaging.
