Worthy of the name expansion
Fractured Utopias is an enormous bonus to the Frostpunk 2 experience, it's evident that there's been great care in creating this DLC. The faction skill trees aren't incredibly deep but varied enough to give enticing tools without being inaccessible. For example you can choose to focus on boosting exploration and outposts as the Menders or giving bonuses with hubs. You can also do the same as their rivals the Venturers at the same time, which is a nice touch. Speaking of Hubs, they're 3 tile centrepieces for your cities, granting bonuses to surrounding tiles and drastically changing the way you plan your cities. Menders give food production via a 'herd' mechanic slowly building up a stockpile of reindeer which you either milk or butcher when needed. They can also be spent for goods production or making exploration quikcer. Venturers on the other hand boost both goods production AND consumption, giving bonuses to heatstamp earnings based on the amount of goods consumed. One of the nice touches I noticed was that for the Venturers if you enable the ad campaign, you actually get in-universe ads either in your notifications or in call outs which made me chuckle. There's unique laws alongside the 'moderate' laws added in the update and traits added to each of the major factions as well such as Menders not giving or accepting heatstamp funding. There's a lot of details that radically change the way you play based on which faction you choose to enable. This is an 'early' review in the sense that I haven't experienced everything that is on offer such as the premium tales and other factions but I'm looking forwards to playing them and what I've experienced so far feels meaningful.
