Description

FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake is an immersive, tactical turn-based RPG, placing you in command of the awe-inspiring Wanzers – powerful military machines.
Assume the role of valiant pilots navigating treacherous battlefields, where the true realities of war come alive with every strategic maneuver. With a meticulously crafted narrative that surprises at every turn, the game showcases an extensive combat and battle system. Enjoy all these features through refreshed graphics and a reorchestrated soundtrack, elevating the gaming experience of the classic Front Mission series.

In the year 2090, the world's conflicts are fought using giant war machines called Wanzers. Huffman Island, the only place where the Oceania Cooperative Union (O.C.U.) and the Unified Continental States (U.C.S.) share a land border is a hotbed of conflict.

An O.C.U. reconnaissance platoon led by Captain Royd Clive is assigned to investigate a U.C.S. munitions plant. They are ambushed by U.C.S. Wanzers, triggering a series of events that plunges the whole island into war. Royd's fiancée, Lieutenant Karen Meure, goes missing in action.

Discharged from the military, Royd sets out to investigate what happened to Karen. His quest leads him closer and closer to the conspiracy behind the incident and the powers that orchestrated it.

With dozens of characters to meet, its mature story, and non-Manichean protagonists, Front Mission is the classic of a tactical Japanese RPG genre, finally available worldwide.

・Two campaigns: O.C.U. and U.C.S.
・Multiple difficulty levels
・Modern and Classic gameplay modes
・Free camera and new tactical map
・Choose between fully reorchestrated or original soundtrack
・Wanzers and Pilots customization

Meh. The original is better.

I’ve played the original Japanese version on the Famicom. I’ve played the fan-translated original Japanese version on an emulator. The charm of a 16-bit game that pushed the limits of the Super Nintendo cannot be overstated. The graphics are perfect, the sound and music is perfect, and the gameplay is very solid and addicting. This remake doesn’t have the 16-bit graphics that gave the original its charm. It doesn’t have the recognizable sound and music, animations are different (and not in a good way), and the overall feel of the game is just… off. Yes, they “updated” all of the graphics, sounds and music, but you have to wonder why they changed it so much when the originals worked just fine. This remake would’ve worked if it was just the 16-bit version but playable on a pc (without an emulator). When the Wanzers move on the battleground, they no longer have that skip with appropriate sound effect. They also changed what happened when a part of a Wanzer gets destroyed, when a Wanzer gets completely destroyed, what happens when you daze/ stun an enemy, how you choose body parts with Guide and Duel… it’s all, once again… just off. It was all fine how it was, but they changed it, and not for the better. Remember Super Mario Allstars? How they kept the original 8-bit Super Mario games exactly the same but made use of the 16-bit capabilities like shadows, music with a little more range, kept the original designs of the characters but gave them a little bit more detail and depth? This is what they could’ve done with Front Mission, but instead opted for radical changes on some parts, and even changed other parts so much they downgraded them. If you’ve never played the original game, this version is fine. It has everything, and is a solid and entertaining turn-based tactics game with some heavy duty military equipment. If you’ve played the original, this game will remind you how much better that version was.

Fun experience, but that RNG...

Disclaimer - I'm reviewing this as someone who didn't play earlier in any Front Mission game (neither any other remake/remaster). I was a bit hesitant before buying (since even with discount price seemed a bit high), but the outcome was surprisingly positive. Campaigns are great fun, I was genuinely curious in the story development, also with pleasure I have updated my wanzers and tested them in the battlefield. Unfortunately, there are some "tricky" parts, like the fact that you need to train hard your pilots in specific type of weapons all the time... But not all weapons seem to be equally effective, despite numbers. This part is IMO quite nasty, as melee weapons and flame throwers are supposedly have higher accuracy... Yet they're missing surprisingly often, even for trained character. So RNG plays a big role in the game and I had that unpleasant impression (also present in first Disciples game), that my characters are missing WAY too often, comparing to even enemies with lower level. Fortunately, if you will somehow survive that aspect (with leveling up and avoiding some kind of weapons it will be a bit better later), you will receive a very entertaining game. I like the fact that despite getting rid of weaker weapons completely, you still have some choice amongst available weapons and parts, that give you some versatility. Game has quite long campaigns, which is great, and also has something extra - aside from new campaign, also set of extra missions and hot-seat multiplayer (AFAIK, feature not present in original games from the series), which is a great addition to the game! I only wish that aside from hot-seat there could be also LAN/Internet multi... And maybe map/scenario editor. Overall, I had a lot of fun with this game and it turned out that it was a very good purchase. Maybe it's not the game on the same level as Missionforce: Cyberstorm, but then again, it is different in multiple aspects, so in its own category it gives a lot of fun experience.

Finally releasing the WHOLE series here!

Ever since I play Front Mission 3 years ago, I have wanted to play this series all the way through from the 1st to 5th game. (Keep in mind that I am playing this using Lutris on Linux MINT, so I may experience issues that Windows users don't). Overall this is a great remake. They did put a lot of effort into the details, little details like dust floating about and imperfections to improve the atmosphere... But I think they wanted to go for an experience that was close to the original as possible, but with improved graphics. I would like to have the ability to see how many missiles I have left just by hovering my cursor over a wanzer. Also, during the Freedom City mission, it was had to tell what unit was actively selected at times, as there was no differentiation to show which unit was the active one when my units were behind buildings. Overall, this is a really great opportunity for westerners to play a series that was never fully released here. For some reason they thought that releasing only 3 and 4 was somehow OK. Squaresoft never really seemed to care about this series for some reason. I am very glad to see Forever Entertainment S.A. give this series the attention it deserves.

Not FM3, but you aughta play it anyway

I feel in love with FM3 on my PS Vita, introduced me to the series - an awesomely stylish, really engaging game with a slightly hairbrained story and an appearance from Dr Slump which was probably the best turn based mech game I've yet played... Anyway, this game's working with much older material, the clean graphics actually detract a bit from the gritty OG titles, but the story is here and you aughta play it before you play the sequels. The story exists, the gameplay exists, the graphics are the medium of visual interaction... The boosts in gameplay later in the series justifies getting this on sale and getting it under your belt.

good fun if you like turn-based tactics

Didn't play the original one but I like this one. Story is not the high point but tactics can be challenging.
