Thanks to GOG

for bringing this wonderful IO Interactive game to all of us dutiful PC fans. The combat is 3rd person based like many games of the time. But what made it so unique was the sense of progression during the campaign. You go from being a plumber, to the leader of a ragtag group of American Mujahedeen fighting against a renewed Soviet threat and subsequent invasion. There are several points in the mission structure where you are able to choose different levels to play through and conquer before others. If you choose one level, you can knock out a bridge that would have brought troops into the play area of a completely separate level. You are assigned troops who you can give orders to, similarly to games like Brothers In Arms, and the gang recruitment feature in GTA:SA. If you enjoy the Gang Wars from San Andreas, or you like third person shooters with squad mechanics you will undoubtedly enjoy this treasure of a game, that unfortunately has had no word of a sequel. But with the success of IO, hopefully they'll one day resurrect it.

From my ol' PS2 to PC!

I first played Freedom Fighters on the ol' classic PlayStation 2 console. A dang fun game. Tactical thinking, cover mechanics, fluid controls, clever enemies, and gritty atmosphere are all still here in fine form. Modest hardware requirements, as my laptop's old 256MB GPU runs it just fine and my desktop's GTX 1050 4GB burns right through it. Freedom Fighters ain't bad at $15 and even better at $10.

Outstanding and underrated game

I finished this game more than 10 times now. It's extremely entertaining. Definitely a classic from EA's golden era. The story is compelling, the soundtrack is extraordinary and the game play itself is just fun and easy to understand. It's been a headache to get my version to run properly on high end PCs, but GOG seems to have solved most of these issues. Borderless window and ultra wide aspect ratios work like they've been there the whole time. I simply cannot thank GOG enough for bringing this game back to us. I bought it as soon as I saw the announcement, and even though It's been 3 months since last time played, I'm honestly thinking of doing yet another playthrough. This game is a must-have. If you haven't had the chance to play it, now is the time. It deserves its spot in your library.

One of My Favorite Games Ever

This was one of my favorite PC games ever. Props to GOG for getting EA to rerelease it, and updated to run on modern systems. The game is STILL a ton of fun, and honestly I haven't seen anything like it to date. The whole "each board is several sub-zones where actions in one affect the troop strength throughout the other sub-zones" is a trip. Game still looks pretty nice as well. If I had any criticisms of the game it is these two things: 1. It should have been longer. The game feels two stages too short (would have been nice to see a trainyard map to finally shut down those troop/supply trains). 2. The game is way too easy. You HAVE to play this game on the hardest difficulty for the enemies to be threatening. Wish there was a harder difficulty after that too, since hardest feels like the baseline normal. But these are minor gripes. The game is still exceptionally well done and a blast to play.

Perfect blend - action and strategy

This is one of the best games I've ever played. It's always fun and challenging. It's an action game but with some strategy elements perfectly blended in. You'll notice them more and more with every level that you advance. Especially when you start commanding your own team of rebels. I'd recommend not to play this game as your standard shooter, it requires a more indirect and thoughtful approach, especially on higher difficulties. The only thing I hate about the game is the story, that USA=good, Russia=bad thing was really unnecesary. Still, it won't spoil the gameplay at all.
