It's just OKAY

Forsaken is one of those games that have been haunting me since childhood. I remember owning it at one point when I was a kid but at the time, I just found it too difficult and confusing so I brushed it off and forgot about it until recently, when I found this remaster. And then I knew, it was time to give it another chance and see if the accumulated skill and experience that I gained over the years will lend itself to a more satisfying adventure. I'm somewhat familiar with this genre, and I suppose you can think of them as SHMUP games translated into a 3D engine because that's definitely how Forsaken feels at times. The only difference is that the level progression is objective-based with plenty of backtracking. Other than that, most of what you'll be doing in this game is blowing up enemy vehicles while dodging bullets. And it's a totally fine premise if you just want to unwind and not think too much about complex storytelling or puzzles. The game controls very smoothly, and the visuals aesthetically look very pleasing. My favorite element is the colorful and dynamic lighting effects that permeate every level. It looks very clean and smooth, and the futuristic setting is probably just something that I have a soft spot for. The combat itself also feels satisfying and fairly challenging. The only thing that, in my opinion, drags this game down is its level design and sometimes obtuse mission objectives. It's pretty easy to get lost in these tight corridors and I sometimes find myself wandering around the areas that I already cleared out in a slim hope that maybe I missed some tiny hidden crevice in the wall that turned out to be the way to progress the level. Now, I'm no level designer, but if it was easier for me to discover secret areas than the actual mission objective, then clearly something went wrong here. Overall, it's a fun but occasionally frustrating game. Probably played best in short bursts rather than long sessions.

Brings back memories, but ...

Ok. So this game, at its time, was something... nice. Decent and fun. It was one of those games that capitalised on Descent wave and added some smoother graphics and decent gameplay. It also added a post-apocaliptic background... but was so damn over-the-top-non-sense that was not even an excuse to create the game. Remaster: the remaster is nice and smooth, but graphics is what it is; generally poor. I feel DOS Descent is better preserved, as has still it's charm. Foresaken remastered not. Just looks bland and old. Gameplay: gameplay... well. It plays mostly like Descent. Have some nice added menus and, perhaps, a more modern approach with its radial menul to select weapons. Some voice over from the protagonist but, generally, it plays bland. Again. Weapon lacks punch. Domed is not easily assessed from what direction is take. Powerups are not easily take, as is not clear how collision detection works with them. Audio is noting special and doesn't feel epic. Nor claustrophobic nor gothic. It looks like a bit "The Running man" gone bad. For the above, I feel the price is way too high.

Forsaken Remastered for Linux

Looks better, plays better, and has more content than the original N64 and PS1 releases. I haven't tinkered with the multiplayer, but replaying beaten stages and finding all the goodies is fun enough. The low system requirements and Linux support is a godsend. Worth grabbing at $20 and regularly on sale for less.

A bliss to play

Fluid and fast-paced combat, not too complicated, taking place in a wonderfully surreal and colorful, moody environment. I always loved to explore these strange places, and there are hidden secrets as a reward. Knowing the original version of the game, it is a bit confusing that you now have to unlock most of the characters by killing them when you meet them in a level, but so be it. Some levels have a time limit, which is a bit annoying. But so far, I always had more than enough time, at least on the easy difficulty. The game features a very unique, slightly dark scifi atmosphere and the full 360 degree movement is just awesome. Still a great game to play.

One of the top PC games ever made

Liquid smooth graphics, scarily smart enemies, and more gut-wrenching action than Quake II. Ranked at number 10 in Ultimate PC's top 100 games of all time (1998), Forsaken is well worth your time. I would recommend getting the original version and playing it in a PC with a graphics accelerator (a Voodoo card would be ideal), rather than the remastered version.
