Description
The Forgotten Realm Archives - Collection Two brings a healthy mix of “Gold Box” and nostalgia goodness to your PC, along with a combination of adventure builders, turn-based and real-time role-playing gameplay. Composed of RPG classics that premiered the Forgotten Realms to video gamers, The Forgotten Realm Archives - Collection Two contains the following titles: Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Hillsfar, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness, Gateway to the Savage Frontier, Treasures of the Savage Frontier, Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures.

Pool of Radiance Located on the northern shore of the Moonsea, the fabled city of Phlan has been overrun by monsters led by a mysterious leader. Your quest: uncover the identity of this evil force and rid Phlan of its scourge, restoring the city to its former glory. Along the way, you hope to find the legendary Pool of Radiance, said to glow with its own mystical power. Does it really give tremendous strength to the warrior who bathes in its magic waters? Or is that just an elfin myth? Before you meet the challenges ahead, you must create your characters and choose their races and battle skills. Then, set off on your glorious quest to drive out the monsters and let civilization reign once more! Curse of the Azure Bonds After you saved the entire city of Phlan and located the Pool of Radiance, a simple trip to Tilverton should have been as easy as a noon-day stroll. But it wasn’t… Ambushed, captured and knocked unconscious, you awake with no idea who attacked you or how you arrived in Tilverton. You only know that five azure-blue symbols are imprinted under the skin of your right arm. The mystical power of the azure symbols ensnares your will like metal bonds! And when the bonds glow, you must do as they command, No magic can dispel them, no prayers can remove them. Your only hope: search the world for members of the alliance who created the bonds and regain control of your own destiny. Only then can you be free of the Curse of the Azure Bonds. Hillsfar Every visit to Hillsfar is a different, exhilarating experience. Explore the city, meet its colorful denizens on the streets or in pubs and discover a quest. Your quest will keep you constantly on the move. Fight in the arena against raging minotaurs, ill-tempered orcs or insulted swordsmen. Enter different buildings and utilize your maze-running and lock-picking skills. Archery and equestrian events may also be part of your overall quest. Think and move fast - these mini-games happen in real-time. For adventure, there is no place like Hillsfar. Secret of the Silver Blades The frigid valleys of the Dragonspine Mountains echo with the desperate plea of terrified miners: "Heroes of the Forgotten Realms, save us from evil!" Unwittingly digging in unhallowed ground, they have disturbed an ancient vault and released its terrible content. Scores of horrific creatures now infest the mine shaft -- and threaten to escape into the world above! You and your heroes must find the way to contain this scourge. All hope depends upon your ability to unravel the age-old mysteries surrounding this vile infestation. Pools of Darkness The Final Challenge. The Ultimate Enemy. First there was Pool of Radiance. Next came Curse of the Azure Bonds. Then followed Secret of the Silver Blades. Now, the epic has come full circle - Pools of Darkness takes you back to the Moonsea region for the final battle against the ultimate enemy. Prepare yourself for the biggest adventure yet as you are propelled into alternate dimensions on an enormous quest. And, it boasts a fully evolved version of the award-winning game system used throughout the series. Transfer your characters from Secret of the Silver Blades with levels, money and items intact, or create new characters! Either way, you’re in for some high-level action! Memories of years long past

I remember having to visit the only shop in town that sold computer games in the Good Old Days. Going there in eager anticipation if the new SSI game had finally arrived or not. Living in the Netherlands, you never knew when they would arrive. And I remember the long nights looking at my ATI EGA-Wonder screen in 16 glorious full-colour shades of green... The only thing now missing in my collection of memories-to-replay is Wizards Crown. The SSI game that started the RPG experience for me. Oh yes, for those that complain that they can't get the screen back in fullscreen mode: read the DOSBOX manual that comes with the game. Or press ALT-ENTER... And yes, DOSBOX runs on Windows 10!!!

Still Amazing After All These Years

When I giddily installed these classics for the first time since retiring my C64 decades ago, I felt certain the magic would be gone. Surely the experience would be merely nostalgic. I couldnt have been more wrong or more happily surprised. Clearing the decrepit slums of Phlan, braving the maze-like island fortress of a mad wizard, allying with Akbar Bel Akash, sending the horrible god Moander back to whatever hell from whence it came, descending deeper, deeper, ever deeper into the seemingly bottomless mines - it's all as compelling now as it was 25 years ago. For those unfamiliar with 2nd ed rules, don't plan on a racially diverse party. It'll be all human with perhaps one non-human thief or nothing at all. Non-humans are subject to severe and, in my opinion, ridiculous and infuriating level caps. You simply cannot take non-human single class or multiclass characters through all four of the Moonsea games. However, if you look past this relic of an ancient system, you will find a challenging crpg leading your brave party of warriors through one rewarding experience after another. With the addition of rangers and paladins in Curse, you'll most likely want to swap out a few characters to have these classes represented in your party. I always give them the same names as the characters they're replacing. You, too, may become hopelessly attached to your party if you look beyond the obviously dated graphics and interface. If you can't stomach not having an elven fighter/mage in your party, I suggest going straight to FRUA. Unlimited Adventures allows you to skirt the archaic race restrictions present in the other games and faithful remakes of Pool and Curse can be downloaded for FRUA. In fact, given the number of high quality modules available for FRUA, it alone would be worth the purchase price. I could go on and on. Get it. Play it. Get lost in it. And if the technical limitations of the era leave empty spaces onscreen, fill them in with your imagination!

One of the best values on GoG

This set includes 7 Gold Box games, plus Hillsfar. Hillsfar kinda sucks. Sorry. But the 6 Gold Box games range from great to really great. That said, these are old, hardcore cRPGs. They don't hold your hand. They stab you in the buttocks. Graphics are mid-80's for the most part, and even the later titles don't really hold up as well as other contemporary titles in terms of graphics and sound. The UI remains clunky and unintuitive. Pool of Radiance, if you get past the cruder than the rest of the gold box games UI and graphics, is perhaps the best cRPG of the series, one of the best from the 80's, and one of the best period. I've spent the last decade trying to get Dungeons and Dragons Online devs to consider converting PoR for a classic quest pack (or expansion). It is just stuffed full of Forgotten Realms lore, challenging but fun combats and puzzles. It is one of those rare titles that makes you want to not sleep until it's done. Then you want more. Much more. Curse of the Azure Bonds is almost as good. The series started to fall slightly here, as Secrets of the Silver Blades and Pools of Darkness were mere shadows of their predecessors. This still makes them some of the best cRPG experiences you will find out of the late 80's/early 1990's. The other set is the Savage Frontier games, made late in the GB engine's life, feature improved, if still archaic, graphics and much better sound. Gateway is a bit unbalanced, thanks to some over-powered gear, and Treasures may be the first game to feature a romance-able NPC. I feel they're better than Secret and Pools of Darkness, and the mild UI improvements make them much easier to get back into versus Pool of Radiance and Curse. The final title isn't a game, but a creation tool for making games built in the Gold Box Engine. The Unlimited Adventures engine is pretty solid for it's time, and a ton of modules have been made for it. Well worth checking a few out.

Good as Gold (Gold Box, that is)

I bought these games when they were new, and still bring them out of the darkness to play them again once in a while. They haven't aged as well at the Ultima series, but they're still wonderfully challenging. And Unlimited Adventures already has a lot of mods in the UA Archives. These games are a welcome addition to my GOG collection. Now if GOG would somehow get and release the rest of the Silver and Gold Box series of games (Heroes of the Lance, Dragons of Flame, Champions of Krynn, Deathknights of Krynn and The Dark Queen of Krynn) and call it The Dragonlance Collection Archive...

This is why I make video games!

This is the greatest D&D conversion ever in my opinion. You get a great mix of role-playing as well as story.. but the true hall mark of the Gold Box engine was the strategy during combat. you can also carry your party from one game to the next. This is the collection I have been waiting for!
