Action Heavy + Beautiful FPS
Summary: Forgive Me Father (FMF) places you in the role of a priest or journalist investigating the strange happenings of an HP Lovecraft-type New England town/area. You are assaulted by, at times, large waves of horrific enemy monsters as you battle through each level to face the source of the madness. It compares very nicely to Doom and Painkiller for my opinions-worth, and that is a very good thing. The Good: -The comic-art style is beautiful and looks great even with the enemies and objects in 2D (so they are always facing you, no sneaking up here) -Performance is great as I'm getting a steady 60 FPS on an RTX3060 Ti, no stutters, crashes, or other issues -Sound and music are fitting and exciting for atmosphere and energy -Controls are good: I've been using an Xbox 360 style controller instead of mouse/keyboard and I had to tone down the sensitivity of the sticks, but it worked really well once I optimized responsiveness for my play-style -Weapons feel different for the most part and have different upgrade paths; the characters also have different special powers -The story was difficult for me to piece together along the way, but it's pretty clear at the finish line and was a good idea -Level environments feel distinct and look every bit as great as the monsters and objects -It tells you how many story fragments and secrets there are (and how many you've found) for the level you are on at the pause menu -Fast-paced action shooting like Doom and Painkiller with levels to explore and arenas within some levels where monsters jump in to mob you The Bad: -The difference between characters isn't a lot as they have the same weapons and upgrades thereto; their different special powers have a similar idea usually, so it's not too different between them aside from the voice actors -Some levels are tricky to navigate: it usually tries to guide you with new enemy spawns, but sometimes I got a bit lost trying to figure out where a new area I opened was -Difficulty felt uneven on normal as the priest (I'll be trying Journalist and tougher difficulties in the future): most of time I was able to move along through the levels, but then I'd hit a spot or boss where it took awhile to figure out how to get through it. Some of that is a me-problem in learning to judiciously use the special powers and upgrade the weapons, but sometimes it felt a little too tricky. Most of the 'trapped in a room' with a big mob of monsters instantly spawning in were easy to predict, but that doesn't mean they're easy to get through (I don't need easy, just fair which it is most of the time and once you understand the powers and upgrades); there were not very many areas I thought would fit in the 'too tricky' column, only really 2 or 3 and again, some of that is on me for not using the mechanics the game gives you at first -I found the story rather difficult to completely piece together on my own even after reaching the finish line (the basics are obvious at the end), but that's a minor issue for me as these games are all about the gameplay which FMF excels at -The 'Y' button will not allow you to reset your skill tree with the controller even though it says so as of 10/31/25, you must you the 'R' key on the keyboard The Bottomline: I bought the game on the promise of its fast-paced FPS style along with the outstanding artwork/graphics and have been very happy with it. The good stuff heavily outweighs the minor criticisms I have. FMF delivers on exciting arcade-shooter gameplay and really makes good use of the Lovecraftian setting. If you're good with the comic art and like classics like Doom or Painkiller, you just might want to buy this game. Good Gaming!
