Europa Universalis 2.9

You have in front of you the final update and ultimate achievement of the Europa Universalis I/II formula. You see, when in 2007 EU3 came out, it was... bad. I mean, REALLY bad. It was broken. Featureless. A big step back from EU2, that came out in 2001. The first big expansion of EU3 came out THREE MONTHS later. And even after another one in 2008 (when the game was repackaged under the "EU3 Complete" name) it was a disappointing game, coming after the historical flavour of EU2. So in 2009, 8 years after EU2, the team behind the AGCEEP mod for EU2 released this "sidequel" to EU2: it had widescreen resolution, it had 10,000 historical events, it had major tweaks to the rules and the AI, it had a better, more streamlined UI, it had better mod support. It was, in that particular context, the "real" EU3 (more like a EU2.5). So, it's a great grand strategy game. But. BUT. But in 2010, EU3 saw the release of another TWO expansions, and the game became good at first, and excellent after the last one (now it was repackaged again under the "EU3 Chronicles" monicker). Yes, the historical flavour was still lacking compared to For The Glory, but in every other aspect, it was now a superior game. So I still recommend For The Glory in 2014, when even Europa Universalis IV exists? Yes, even just for a trip into history of strategy gaming. If you want to try Europa UNiversalis I or II, skip those and get For The Glory instead. (NOTE: last patch is a 1.3 beta "29 December", available only in the Paradox Plaza; the last AGCEEP release it's the 1.59b4 with a hotfix.) link http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/ftg-1-3-beta-patch-unified-thread.670289/#post-16633623)

Sort of Europa Universalis 2 Ultimate

This is like the ultimate version of Europa Universalis 2. Made years after the official EU2 release, it contains lots of bug-fixes and improvements over the original. Mods like AGCEEP were integrated and altogether deliver a fantastic historical strategy experience. The learning curve is somewhat steep, but the game-play is very rewarding. I literally spent months on this one, trying out almost every single nation, learning about their history through the event chains and trying to influence the course of history. Recommended if you love classic strategy games!

Would be good if it wasn't so buggy

Having played EU2 to death, I eventually got around to trying this 'enhanced' version of the game. Sadly, I found it to be troublesome in terms of frequent crashes, usually when scrolling across the map, whilst also encountering various bugs that ruined my campaigns. For example, one glaring bug with diplomacy made it impossible for me to cancel alliances with countries, even if I was the leader of that alliance. With the option to cancel an alliance greyed out, hovering over the option told me I wasn't in an alliance with Hessen, yet to the left in the diplomacy screen, it said I was. Further to this, alliances are only supposed to last for a defined time period, usually ten years, before they expire. Yet for some reason the game automatically kept renewing the alliance so that in fact, it never expired. It's a shame really, because there's so much potential to 'For The Glory', but it's annoying bugs and issues like this that break the desire to play it for any length of time. Especially after putting tens of hours into a Grand Campaign, only for such bugs to appear.

A nostalgic trip through the wires.

Of course it's very dated in appearance and the emphasis is very much on middle-Europe unlike (arguably) the most recent iteration of this franchise. And yet the sheer volume of events to deal with make this a fun experience for its cost: you can't really go wrong with FtG with it's modifiability and its bumpy yet cathartic trip down the medieval cobblestones of old paradoxia for a few pennies.

The ultimate historic experience

This is the game to get if you want to learn a bit of history while playing a game. This package contains over 10000 historical events under the AGCEEP mod, created by the (then) thriving modding community. The UI and AI tweaks serve this game well, so there is really no reason to go back to EU2. Well...except the music. The phenomenal compilation of classical music in EU2 is missing, so to enhance your history learning experience you should populate the music folder with the familiar songs (and perhaps some new ones too)...
