Description
Firewatch is a single-player first-person mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness.

The year is 1989. You are a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor Delilah is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio—your only contact with the world you've left behind. But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the forest, you’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.

A Note: Firewatch is a video game about adults having adult conversations about adult things. If you plan on playing with a younger gamer, that might be good to know going in.
  • A stunningly beautiful wilderness environment that expands as you explore.
  • A tailor-made story: the choices you make shape the narrative and build relationships.
  • An edge-of-your-seat mystery.
  • Secrets and discoveries to be made over every hill.
  • Living, breathing characters brought to life by Cissy Jones (The Walking Dead: Season 1) and Rich Sommer (Mad Men)
  • A spectacular wilderness environment by Olly Moss (Illustrator) and Jane Ng (The Cave, Brutal Legend)
  • A thrilling story and script by Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin (The Walking Dead: Season 1, Poker Night at the Inventory)
  • A stirring original soundtrack by Chris Remo (Gone Home)
  • Fluid first-person animation by James Benson (Ori & The Blind Forest)
  • Gameplay scripting and design work by Patrick Ewing (Twitter) and Nels Anderson (Mark of the Ninja)
  • Programming by Will Armstrong (Bioshock II), Ben Burbank (Costume Quest 2, Space Base DF-9), and Paolo Surricchio (Deadpool, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare)

Huge disappointment

A lot of people seem to be complaining that this is a walking sim, which it is, but that's not actually a bad thing. Walking sims can have great plots and characters. This game has neither. Here's your spoiler alert. The prologue is spelled out in a series of text boxes, which is kind of cheap in itself, but what really bugs me is that it tells you, "You fall in love and get married, okay? But then your wife gets a mental illness and you leave her, so now you're sad," in the course of a minute or two. It's really cheap that they build you up and let you down so quickly. The rest of the game is about you hiding from your problems by being a forest ranger fire watch guy, whose only contact with civilization is a walkie-talkie that you use to talk to some woman I forget the name of. The game heavily pushes you towards making you start a relationship with this woman, whether you want to or not. Whether or not you enjoy this game probably hinges on how annoying you find this walkie-talkie woman. I personally could not stand her. There is a sub-plot to this game involving some strange happenings going on in the park, but spoiler alert again: It turns out to just be some guy. Bit of a letdown there, too.

loved it

I loved the game. It is among those few I will never forget. The atmosphere is great and the story is good too, a heaven for those who love to explore.

A good adventure to play with kids

Even though the game positioned as 'adult' with the swearing and the story, I played it with my kids and they enjoyed it. They like outdoors and this game resonated with it. There is a bit of motion sickness aspect to the game, especially around climbing, but we got used to it pretty quickly. The visuals are pretty good. We enjoyed running around and looking at the map and compass and figuring out where we need to go. It is a story, not so much a game, so don't look for action, look for a bit of exploration, dialog and story. The game is also not very long, but I don't see that as a problem. Good: visuals, story, dialog, atmosphere, family game. Could be better: probably many things, but I can't really say anything specific. If you just try to enjoy the game as light experience and don't really expect too much from it... definitely NOT for the folks playing multiplayer shooters. :) P.S. Remove head bobbing from the settings and you only get trouble while climbing.

Triggers emotions and atmospheric

"Firewatch" will be added to my very short list of games that triggered my emotions and left me thoughtful after I completed them. The other titles in this list include "Unreal: Return to Na Pali" and "Control". I believe that this experience depends on the player, so others may feel differently, but I would definitely recommend trying it yourself.

3 stars on any other page

I gave Firewatch 4 stars because I enjoyed it. I would rather rate it 3 stars, but on GOG 3 star games are usually cr*p, so I couldn't do that to this good game. Nervertheless I am dissapointed because it took me only about three hours to play it through. It has been like an interactive indie movie. Not a bad experience, but on the other hand not worth 18.- €. I think 10 - 12.- € would have been a better price. Another drawback is how surprinsingly small this "endless" forest feels. The game is short, but not fast. The most of the time, you will walk and talk. Wich is not a bad thing if you are prepared to listen to the dialouges and try to identify yourself with the protagonist.
