Firewatch is a single-player first-person mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness.
The year is 1989. You are a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor Delilah is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio—your only contact with the world you've left behind. But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the forest, you’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.
A Note: Firewatch is a video game about adults having adult conversations about adult things. If you plan on playing with a younger gamer, that might be good to know going in.
A stunningly beautiful wilderness environment that expands as you explore.
A tailor-made story: the choices you make shape the narrative and build relationships.
An edge-of-your-seat mystery.
Secrets and discoveries to be made over every hill.
Living, breathing characters brought to life by Cissy Jones (The Walking Dead: Season 1) and Rich Sommer (Mad Men)
A spectacular wilderness environment by Olly Moss (Illustrator) and Jane Ng (The Cave, Brutal Legend)
A thrilling story and script by Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin (The Walking Dead: Season 1, Poker Night at the Inventory)
A stirring original soundtrack by Chris Remo (Gone Home)
Fluid first-person animation by James Benson (Ori & The Blind Forest)
Gameplay scripting and design work by Patrick Ewing (Twitter) and Nels Anderson (Mark of the Ninja)
Programming by Will Armstrong (Bioshock II), Ben Burbank (Costume Quest 2, Space Base DF-9), and Paolo Surricchio (Deadpool, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare)
Just take it for what it is, and enjoy it for what it offers, the story and atmosphere will unavoidably suck you in. I agree that the game is short, so wait for a sale.
It sure is short. I finished it after 3.5h and don't really feel like replaying. The story is somewhat absorbing, you can feel the characters and the writing is good, though the ending leaves a bitter taste. Some may like it because that's what life is - bitter, but if you're looking for a meaningful journey with a rather happy ending to contrast your daily sorrows or whatever - you will be disappointed. Other than that, the music is pleasant, graphic style is up to one's preferences but it works for this game. Overall it's nice to play and worth checking out when you get it on sale.
Minor spoilers ahead.
Yes, Firewatch is a walking simulator. But while I did not like games like Dear Esther and Going Home, Firewatch hit a chord with me. Firstly, it rings better to mature audience. You meet adult themes in the game like death, separation, forgiveness, dementia etc. Secondly, you connect better with this game than Dear Esther, as you are in constant radio contact with another person over the course of the game (and this chatter is fun and voice acting is very good too). Finally, the art style by Ollie Moss is particularly stunning, somewhat alike rotoscoping in XIII, but better, warmer and cleaner. The game really has immersive atmosphere and I did many screenshots on the way.
The bad side? As other reviewers said, the plot seems underwhelming, especially in the last third of the game. It builds up tension well, but fails to relieve neatly. The finale is somewhat weak and controversial (though I still enjoyed it). I agree it looks like the devs ran out of money and decided to wrap it up.
Finally, the choices do not impact the game this much, they change some chatter and introduce a (kinda) second ending, but not really.
What a surprising adventure it was, to start Firewatch- it doesn't look like it, but it's going to keep you playing with anticipation for more and more. Great game idea and scenario, though very very simple. Love it, thanks for crreating such pearls. Recommend it totally
Wasn't sure what to expect from Firewatch, I was pleasantly surprised. The dialog really drove the story, It felt like a story podcast combined with a scenic walking simulator. Lots of dialog choices, though I'm sure sure how much of an impact they have on the story.
